FDTC President’s Faculty of the Year Award

Pursuant to Policy 20-1, Presidential Responsibilities, the President’s “Faculty of the Year Award” for excellence in teaching is an honor bestowed upon FDTC faculty to acknowledge and reward exceptional individual professional accomplishment and to encourage ongoing excellence in teaching. The award proclaims, on behalf of the entire college community, the President’s pride in the dedication and accomplishment of FDTC faculty in providing instructions that prepare our students for their professional, scholarly, and civic lives. The award also recognizes the core importance of the teaching mission at the college, and the foundation of that mission in faculty subject expertise, skillful methods of teaching, and attention to student learning. The award reflects the commitment of FDTC to serving the citizens of the Pee Dee region by providing the best possible college instruction.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Nominees must be current full-time faculty.
  • Nominees must have completed at least 3 years of full-time teaching at FDTC.
  • Faculty may not self-nominate.
  • Nominator must be a faculty colleague, administrator, student, staff member, alumni, or community member.

Nominations

  • All nominations will be sent to the Director of Center for Teaching & Learning.
  • All nominations will be vetted through HR, and the list of nominees who meet eligibility requirements will be sent to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
  • Individual faculty members will be informed by Vice President of Academic Affairs about their nominations and will be invited to submit a teaching portfolio.
  • Process for nominations will be completed by September 30, 2015.
  • All invited nominees will submit teaching portfolios to the Director of Center for Teaching & Learning by October 30, 2015 for review by the CTL Advisory Committee.
  • By November 30, 2015, the Director of CTL will forward the names of 2 finalists to the Vice President of Academic Affairs who will review and confer with the President regarding the recommendations.
  • By mid-December, the President will make the selection of the Faculty of the Year Award and announce it to the entire college community.

Portfolio Requirements

  • Will not exceed 20 pages including attachments
  • Portfolio must be organized in no fewer than six sections which will include appendices of supporting materials and is electronic
  • Portfolio should begin with a brief statement of teaching philosophy
  • Portfolio will include a curriculum vitae or resume’
  • Portfolio should address teaching strategies and examples of materials, brief description of content expertise and professional growth, service to students, profession, institution, and system, standards for assessment of student learning and performance

Recipient Responsibilities

  • Recipient of this award shall make themselves available as mentors to other faculty
  • Recipient will prepare and deliver speech during awards banquet/honor’s night
  • Recipient will prepare and deliver speech during commencement ceremony
  • Recipient will agree to be the FDTC representative at SCTEA
