Navigator’s Notes
Sir Knights, Family and Friends,
I hope this letter finds you all well. We are entering a busy time of year with the exemplification of the Fourth degree, and, Special Olympics coming upon us. Please remember to bring some money to “buy a block” for our World Series board. This will help keep down the cost of dues. Please also remember to have your candidates turn in their money for their exemplification soon. I continue to be very honored to serve as the Faithful Navigator of this assembly especially after we collected over $300.00 for the Louisiana flood victims. I’m proud to be associated with such a great fraternal organization.
God Bless,
Rob Wilhelm, FN

Reflection from the Faithful Admiral
The evening is one of my favorite times of the day. It's a time to look back, take stock, and reflect on the events of the day – whether good or bad. When weather permits, my wife and I walk, or sometimes we'll just fix a pot of coffee and talk with each other about our day and what we've accomplished. It's a time for careful thought and evaluation, for thanksgiving, and for prayer.
Our Lord had a similar practice during His earthly ministry. At the end of a wearying and demanding day, He went up on a mountain by Himself for a few moments of reflection and prayer in the presence of His Father.
The value of the quiet presence of our heavenly Father and the careful examination of how we have engaged life on a given day has great significance. Perhaps this was the goal of the Apostle Paul's challenge for us to redeem the time that is, to make sure we are making the best use of the time God give us for living and serving,
As the day winds to a close, take some time for quiet reflection. In the serenity of the evening, we can, in God's presence, get a more accurate perspective on life and how we are living it.
God is pleased with work done well. He honors good workers, and so should we. God is pleased with His Knights of Columbus and Assembly 2588.
PAX,
PFN Frank Mulcahy
Faithful Admiral

The Patriotic Degree
The Fourth Degree is the patriotic arm of the Knights of Columbus. They promote the virtue of patriotism through their programs and provide honor guards for Church and civic functions.
The Fourth Degree was first established in New York on (Washington's Birthday) February 22, 1900. Fourteen hundred members were chosen to witness this ceremony. It was expected that they would recruit from their local councils other Knights worthy of receiving the Orders highest degree.
The Fourth Degree is frequently regarded as an honorary title with its regalia of tuxedos, capes, chapeaux, and swords, and should rather be thought of in terms of service to church and country. Since its establishment in 1900, the primary objective of this degree is to promote the ideals of Catholicism and Patriotism side by side.
The exemplification of the Fourth Degree with its ritual added patriotism to the three original principles of the Order: charity, unity and fraternity. Any Third Degree member in good standing is eligible for membership in the Fourth Degree.
Help your brother Knights enrich their commitment to our country and the Order and reach their highest potential as a Knight by joining the highest and most prestigious degree in the Knights of Columbus: The Fourth Degree.

“SERVING THOSE WHO SERVED…”
OUR SYMBOL:
Sir Knights of the Fourth Degree, deem it an honor and privilege to carry our TRIAD EMBLEM, which features The Dove, The Cross, and The Globe. Our Honored Order cherishes as its Patron, Christopher Columbus.
Spiritually, the sacred symbols fashioned on our sword and lapel pin, typify the union of the Three Divine Persons in one GodheadThe Most Holy Trinity.
- The GlobeGod the Father, Creator of the Universe.
- The CrossGod the Son, Redeemer of Mankind.
- The DoveGod the Holy Spirit, Sanctifier of Humanity.
HISTORY:In the early years of the Fourth Degree, members met as part of their councils, mostly after meetings. In 1910, during a reorganization of the Order's leadership, the first Assemblies were created. Additionally the position of Supreme Master was established to lead the Fourth Degree internationally. Vice Supreme Masters lead Provinces and Masters head Districts. This system has spread and flourished as Sir Knights not only serve their local Church through their service to local councils but also their joint efforts in these Assemblies. The Honor Guard, first called for in 1886 was officially formed in 1902, for ceremonial purposes. Since that time, the uniforms of the Color Corps have varied, however all have shared the similar theme of mariners. Most noticeable in today's current uniform is the chapeau worn with ostrich feathers.
MEMBERSHIP: The Fourth Degree ritual added patriotism to the three original principles of the order: charity, unity, fraternity. Any Third Degree member in good standing with at least six months membership in the order – is eligible for membership in the Forth Degree. The primary purpose of the Forth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and love of and loyalty to the knights’ respective countries through active membership in local Forth Degree groups called Assemblies. Forth Degree members must retain their membership as Third Degree members in the local council to remain in good standing.
EVENTS:The first Exemplification of the new Degree was scheduled to be held in the Astor Hotel in New York City on February 22, 1900. However, there were so many candidates the Exemplification had to be moved to a larger venue. Therefore the site was moved to the Lenox Lyceum. At this first Exemplification of the Fourth Degree 1,100 members of the Knights of Columbus, being in good standing "took their fourth." The second Exemplification, held in Boston on May 8, 1900 saw another 750 Third Degree knights join the ranks of Sir Knights. cherishes as its Patron, Christopher Columbus.
Once a Sir Knight attains an office, he is entitled to wear the colors of that office until elected or appointed to a higher office, except for the Marshal [appointed by the Master of District] and the Color Corps Commanders [appointed by the Faithful Navigator] who are appointed for a specific term and then revert to their previous colors when that term expires.
