Palm Sunday Sunday 9th April 2017

Today Palm Sunday, we begin Holy Week, bringing together the coming of Christ in triumph into his own city and the proclamation of his Passion. The Passion is a drama with a large cast, and hearing it, we must ask “Where do I stand?” Because we are all in that, a story of betrayal, trial, suffering and death.

Jesus of course is the central figure, fulfilling the role spoken of in today’s First Reading, “The suffering servant”. He puts up with all punishment and insult, because of his great confidence in God’s love.

We should all draw strength from his example of courage. Let us remember today all who stand for justice, those who speak against oppressive systems. Make sure and reflect during the week on what Christ endured, there are many opportunities to act and live like Him.

“The greatest fault is to think you have none.”

Please remember in your prayers:

HOLY WEEK

“God has not called us to see through each other, but to see each other through.”

Mon – Wed Mass 6.55am, 10.00am (Holy Week) Tues - Holy Hour 7.00 - 8.00pm

Thursday 8.00pm: Mass of the Lord’s Supper. In this Mass we remember in a special way Jesus’ last supper with his apostles when he gave himself to them and to us in the Eucharist. At this Mass there will be the ceremonies of the washing of feet and the presentation of the Holy Oils—which remind us to love, heal and sanctify. After Mass the Blessed Sacrament will be removed from the Tabernacle and reserved on the altar of repose. Here we watch and pray until midnight.

Good Friday 3.00pm: The Liturgy of the Passion. Today is a day of fasting and abstinence.

“This is the wood of the Cross …”

Today we remember Our Lord’s Passion and Death on the cross and pray for all our needs.

There is an opportunity to receive Holy Communion and to venerate the cross.

Good Friday 7.30pm: The Stations of the Cross.

“If you wouldn’t write it sign it, don’t say it.”

Holy Saturday: (no Morning Mass) Easter Vigil Service Mass 8.00pm

“This is the night when you saved our fathers….”

The Blessing of the Paschal Fire, the lighting of the Easter Candle and the readings remind us of God’s love and concern. This is all in a manner of a family reunion around the fire with someone saying, “do you remember the time when….” then the renewal of the Baptismal promises.

Can I encourage as many as possible to join us in St. John’s Church for the Easter Liturgy.
