Residential Social Care Worker
JOB DESCRIPTION

Residential Social Care Workers will fulfil all criteria in the four sections of this job description.

Managing and Caring for Young People

Be sensitive to the needs of individual children, taking into account, race, culture, gender, language and religion. To cultivate a positive atmosphere in which children can develop their emotional cognitive, moral, spiritual and physical potential to the full.

Talk and listen to children and to observe their behaviour, recording significant features in writing, in keeping with the school’s policies and procedures.

Provide care and control for children at the school.

Be responsible for pupils’ health and safety whilst they are in their care.

Provide a range of proactive and stimulating activities that promotes the development of young people.

Deal effectively with everyday situations affecting the welfare of the young people e.g. those refusing to attend school or displaying challenging behaviour.

Work within time-scales that are child focused and meets individuals needs.

Facilitate children’s access to primary care facilities, home and other agencies.

Proactively supervise young people at all times.

Ensure good standards of care practice within the groups, maintaining high quality of service for delivery for children with complex needs.

Administration and Time Management

Produce factual, accurate and concise written information on the young people in their care.

Prioritise work to meet deadlines as agreed with Line Managers.

Fulfil all administrative duties in relation to:

(a)Pupil’s black file.

(b)Care Plans (long and short).

(c)Linkworker duties.

(d)Children’s diaries.

(e)Professional supervision.

(f)Holding/Support Holding forms.

(g)Annual Review forms/Annual Reports.

(h)House Logs.

Teamwork, Communication and Liaison

Be required to move around groups to: meet service needs, to enhance the quality of care, or to gain wider experience.

Inform colleagues of relevant developments for example, in weekly staff meetings, I.T.C. groups or by making arrangements to discuss matters with colleagues.

Report any Health and Safety issues of concern to the appropriate person as detailed in the school’s policy and procedures.

Work co-operatively as part of a staff team covering the duties on your designated house.

Undertake sleep-ins where directed or on a rota basis.

Support less experienced staff as part of their induction programme.

Fully support and consistently apply house routines and expectations, and support those of other houses that you may work on.

Contribute to the monitoring/evaluating of young people’s needs and social development.

Professional Development and Practice

Maintain and promote the culture and ethos of the school in a professional manner.

Set high standards for pupils in maintaining the care of the fabric, equipment, buildings and grounds of the school.

Keep informed of good practice in order to develop skills, knowledge and experience.

Participate in regular supervision in accordance with the school’s policy and procedure.

Report immediately to a Senior Manager, or any other appropriate person, any malpractice or evidence of malpractice of any member of staff.

Read, understand and be required to sign as requested all relevant school policies.

Attend staff meetings and training sessions as required.

Perform within the Children’s Act 1989 and the Care Standards Act 2000, requirements and the school’s policies, practice and procedures, as defined within the PPP manual, maintaining consistency of practice.

Be a positive role model, demonstrating a high level of commitment to young people’s welfare.

Establish appropriate professional and emotional boundaries in working with young people.

Have an awareness of how behaviour, emotion, attitude and actions may impact or effect young people.

Develop/have a knowledge of basic health care issues, including signs and symptoms of substance abuse, infectious diseases and other general childhood illnesses.

Develop/have a knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of childhood and adolescence.

Work with the guiding principles of consistency, quality of supervision, routines, structure, positive reinforcement, repetition and stability.

Additional Responsibilities
for RSCW’s according to Grade
Senior Residential Social Care Workers

Act in accordance with the Residential Social Care Worker’s Job Description.

T o monitoring and evaluate the work of other Residential Social Care Workers with an aim to improving their knowledge and practice.

Chair House/Team meetings as required.

Offer formal supervision to Residential Social Care Workers.

Be accountable to the Care Manager for a designated area of responsibility.

A relevant qualification is desirable whilst 5 plus years experience within this field is essential.

Any newly appointed person internally or externally is subject to a 6-month probationary period.

Grade 3 Residential Social Care Workers

Act in accordance with the Residential Social Care Worker’s Job Description.

Deputise for the Senior RSCW’s in their absence.

Chair House/Team meetings as required.

Offer formal supervision to Residential Social Care Workers.

Be accountable to the Care Manager for a designated area of responsibility.

A minimum of 4 years experience within this field is essential.

Any newly appointed person internally or externally is subject to a 6-month probationary period.

Grade 2 Residential Social Care Workers

Act in accordance with the Residential Social Care Worker’s Job Description.

Deputise for the Grade 3 RSCW’s in their absence.

Be accountable to the Care Manager for a designated area of responsibility.

A minimum of 3 years experience within this field is essential.

Any newly appointed person internally or externally is subject to a 6-month probationary period.

Grade 1 Residential Social Care Workers

Act in accordance with the Residential Social Care Worker’s Job Description.

A minimum of a years experience within this field is essential.

Any newly appointed person internally or externally is subject to a 6-month probationary period.

Basic Grade Residential Social Care Workers

Act in accordance with the Residential Social Care Worker’s Job Description.

No experience necessary, this role provides an opportunity for those who wish to undertake a career within this field.

Persons appointed to a basic grade will, after a satisfactory completion of their probationary period, be promoted to a grade 1 RSCW.
