DANC 4205/06 Fall Term

J.Bolt York University

Fall Term Assignment
Reading Response/Class Discussion

Worth 5% of final grade

Assignment Objective: This assignment centers around the required course text, The Inner Game of Tennis. Although this text does not explicitly mention or apply its concepts directly to the teaching and learning of dance, this assignment provides the 4th year dance student the opportunity to apply its suggestions to their own studio practice.

While everyone is required to read the course text, you may also want to read the following article to augment the process of applying the Inner Game of Tennis to your own studio practice.

Bolt, J. (2008, July). Silencing the silent: A feminist analysis of classical ballet in a Canadian university program. Paper presented at the Annual CORPS de Ballet International Conference, Aspen Colorado.

If you would like to read this reading as well, please email me at and I will email you a pdf. version of this paper.

In order to facilitate a productive and meaningful group discussion on Nov. 8, it is important you are prepared to speak about The Inner Game of Tennis in its entirety. The short written response should be no more that 2 pages and should serve as a catalyst for group discussion. Therefore, go beyond the mere content of the article in your written response, and raise a question or comment that you feel relates to your dance training in the past, present and/or future. In other words, assume the reader(s) of your response have read the text. This will prevent needless explanations of the texts’ content, but rather will allow you to focus on your thoughts, comments and application of the ideas to your own studio practice.

You will be graded on the quality of your written response and your participation in the group discussion. You will be placed in groups of 3 or 4 get the discussion going and to share your responses. Then we will open it up to a larger group discussion. The Course Director will grade the written statement with respect to insight and writing skill (/5). The small group discussion will be graded out of (/5). The final grade for the assignment will be out of 10 and broken down to 5% of your final grade for the course.
