Fall 2011 TSL 450/ 550 Internship And/Or ESL Institute Employment (3/24/2011)

Fall semester 2014 (original letter: 4/1/14) update: April 14, 2014

Application: TSL 450 internships http://www.uwlax.edu/tesol/advising.htm

The application for TESOL internship credit is on pages 2 and 3 of this document.

Application deadline: May 4, 2014

Please register for all classes prior to applying for the internship inasmuch as your availability may affect some of the internship placements.

In most cases, you must have declared a TESOL minor to be eligible to earn TSL 450 credit.

There is a four-credit TSL 450 internship requirement for all TESOL minors. One TSL 450 credit represents 35 – 40 hours of service in the field (an average of 2.5 hours/week/semester). Prerequisites are junior status, ENG 110/112, and CST 110. You may complete the four-credit internship requirement over the course of one – four semesters. By May 10, you will receive notification about your accepatance for an internship and instructions about how to submit the required TSL 450 registration materials through Career Services. You will need to complete the registration process through Career Services at your convenience during the week of May 12. Please notify TESOL Coordinator Janis Hanson by separate email if you will not be on campus that week.

TESOL students normally earn at least two of the required TSL 450 credits working at the UW-L ESL Institute. ESL Institute interns provide valuable support to ESL students and faculty. Typical responsibilities include tutoring, grading homework, working in the lab, and assisting instructors in class. For the ESL Institute to consider your application for an internship, you will need to submit your application (pp. 2 – 3 of this document) by May 9 and include information about when you will be available during the fall semester.

If you would like to earn internship credit for service outside the UW-L ESL Institute, you will need to specify the location in the internship application. We can arrange TSL 450 internsthips at Western Technical College ELL program (La Crosse), which has been a rewarding experience for interns. TESOL students have also earned internship credit for work in the UW-L Office of Multicultural Students Service (OMSS) pre-college programs. Contact the OMSS prior to applying for internship credit if you would like to consider this option. There is a wide variety of sites that merit consideration for TSL 450 placement, and many students studying abroad have been able to organize internships. Please use the TSL 450 application if you would like to propose a site for your fall internship.

You also have the option to work with English language learners in Costa Rica this summer to fulfill part of the hours required for a Fall 2014 internship. TESOL graduate Arie Bachmann’s wrote an article for our TESOL website about her International Student Volunteer (ISV) Experience in Costa Rica in summer 2012. TESOL Coordinator Janis Hanson met with the Costa Rican ISV coordinator in San José, Costa Rica, last month; and she can vouch for the quality and safety of the ISV program. Please contact Ms. Hanson if you are interested in more details.

Email your application, pp. 2 – 3 of this document, to the ESL Institute Director and the TESOL Program Coordinator:
