QNJAC (Worker Participation Group) and (TUC) jointly developed training course

Thisfour day course is designed for all workplace representatives, Safety Representatives (SR) and Representatives of Employee Safety (RES) from within the quarrying industry. It provides an introduction to the Quarries Regulations 1999 and other applicable Regulations and will help new and existing workplace reps to build their skills, knowledge and confidence to beable to carry out the functionsof the WorkplaceRepresentative, SR or RES within the quarry.

During the four day course youwill:

  • Share experiences of the hazards and risks inthe quarry environment andthe way that workers and their representatives can participate in reducing and controlling them.
  • Develop, and practiceusing, the skills required to carry out the functions of a SR or RES within the quarry.
  • Examine the way that health and safety is managed in the workplace, compliance with the Quarries Regulations 1999, other Regulations and other key standards.

The course is designed to:

  • Help workplace representativesSR and RES become more knowledgeable about their functions and rights in law, regardless of how long they have been a workplace representative
  • Encourage the establishment of and / or the maintenance of safety committees and animprovement to systems for worker participation and consultation within them
  • Show reps how health and safety law is designed andhow it can be used to solveproblems
  • Introduce SR and RES to health and safety management techniques and ways of controlling risks, (Risk Assessment) and the controls developed from them
  • Help reps plan how to tackle and handle workplace health and safety issues

  • Health and Safety issues; Dealing with themin the quarrying industry.
  • The Quarries Regulations and industry safety targets.
  • Worker Participation - SR Functions and RES functions
  • The appointment of workplacereps in the quarry industry –SR and RES.
  • Regulations and guidance applicable tothe appointment of representatives etc.

  • Finding information - Finding out what workers think
  • Tackling priority hazards at work
  • Workforce Inspections
  • Inspections – the law
  • Planning an inspection
  • Quarry workplaces, inspection checklist
  • Reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences (RIDDOR)
  • Inspections following notifiable injuries and occurrences
  • Investigating injuries and dangerous occurrences
  • Action after an inspection, reports and reporting
  • Health and safety standards
  • Risk assessment and the employer’s duties
  • Health and safety committees
  • Effective safety committees

QNJAC Worker Participation Group,agreed targets:

  • Every quarry with more than 5 employees would have a Safety Representative (Trade Union Appointed) or employee appointed Representative of Employee Safety
  • That every Safety Representative or Representative of Employee Safety will have attended the QNJAC/TUC Health and Safety Representatives in the Quarrying Industry course, or equivalent, within 12 months of taking up the role
  • All Regulation 8(1)(c) appointees and worker representatives will be competent to understand their respective roles
