Our mental health programmes recruit over 200 students per year and is an area that is rapidly expanding and are key contributors to the success of the Department of Nursing, Midwifery and health. Our programmes are rated highly by students who frequently score Northumbria University amongst the top UK universities for the quality of teaching on the course and academic support.

The role involves contributing to the delivery of a range of modules across the programmes. Over the duration of the appointment, Graduate Tutors are expected to teach/demonstrate clinical skills, undertake lectures, support students’ independent learning, conduct placement visits and provide tutorial and pastoral guidance and advance research activity. As a result, applicants must be able to meet the travel requirements of the post. The role also involves studying a PhD programme.

Key Responsibilities:

The principal duties of the post holder will be to:

  • Work flexibly as part of a team to contribute to undergraduate and post graduate teaching in the mental health programmes. This will be up to a maximum of 6-8 hours per week.
  • Contribute to the development of teaching materials and delivery into modules on undergraduate programmes
  • Contribute to the support of students in University and Practice
  • Use appropriate teaching, learning and assessment methods to support learning and teaching
  • Maintain professional competencies and registration
  • Engage in research, professional practice and other scholarly activities in support of the Faculty’s academic development plan
  • Maintain effective relationships with key partners (NHS Trusts) and professional organisations in order to enhance the profile of the Faculty
  • Participate in internal and external networks to contribute to student recruitment
  • Contribute to academic and pastoral tutoring
  • Maintain student progress records and ensure compliance with University procedures/policies related to student progression
  • Undertake any other duties consistent with the level and nature of the post
  • Undertake a programme of PhD study

Location:

This post is based at the University’s Coach Lane campus, with requisite to work from and / or travel to other University premises and external organisations as required. Some national and international travel to academic partners and corporate clients in relation to programmes, awards, consultancy and / or other activities appropriate to the nature of the post may be required.

Attendance Requirements:

37 hours per week. The job requires attendance where necessary at any of the University’s teaching sites, but will be based at Coach Lane Campus. A typical workload may exceptionally include weekday, evening classes or weekend short course work / open day activities.

Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Practice (PG HEP)

If you have less than two years’ full time equivalent experience of teaching in further or higher education, or if you do not have a relevant teaching qualification you are required to participate in the Early Career Development Programme for Academic Staff (ECDfAS) or an approved equivalent course leading to HEA membership.

GRADUATE TUTOR

If you voluntarily leave the programme or resign from the University within 2 years of course completion, you will be required to reimburse the University a percentage of the course fees in line with the Financial Support for Northumbria Programmes guidelines.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 therefore the successful candidate will be subject to a Criminal Records Bureau check.
