Faculty Senate Diversity Committee

Sub-Committee: Curriculum Committee

Present: Paul Karpuk, Carolyn Fallahi, Audra King, Kurt Love, Sue Koski

  1. Why don’t people want d-designation? The procedure might have rubbed someone the wrong way…. Every designation you have to put in for it. Attitude…. I’ve been teaching diversity. How dare you tell me what is diversity. When we went through training (workshops), some ideas suggested, some take and some don’t take. Transformed the course. To not have a process, is irresponsible to the students as well. It should enrich the curriculum, so you need others in charge.
  2. Bioethics – 2 courses from Science brought up. Have to have strategies for controlling it. That can be exciting as to how we can handle it.
  3. Paul will come up with the master list. Carolyn will put it up on the website.
  4. Send out an e-mail. Instead of saying come to the workshop… brainstorm and share ideas so we can collaborate. Workshops are collaborative. Sharing ideas to come up with campus consensus for the diversity designation.
  5. Brown bags. There is never a discussion about how things are doing.
  6. Beth…. Give list of participants and find out what the course was that they would apply for d.
  7. CCSU – d-designation on-line complicated. Confusing. Maybe we should re-write so that it is very clear. Click on the form or archives. All you have to do is check the diversity button (which doesn’t work). When you click on it and submit, it disappears. A list of courses within the department.
  8. On the FSDC website, have page if you want to apply for the d-designation, you have to have the curriculum committee make it easier on the University curriculum committee. Paul can work with Don to design a simpler version of the steps. Sue is concerned that departments aren’t interested in attending the workshop. If we had a more streamlined process, know that they would do it. Is this process to lengthy. Audra could write a sample to post on website. To draw in a wider net, we need to make the internal process of our committee more user friendly.
  9. Paul could be able to help with the curriculum process for anyone interested too. Study abroad went to faculty meetings and explained the process. E-mail the chairs for 5 or 10 minutes to explain the process.
  10. Social work has a million adjuncts for the same course.
  11. Group submissions…. Bunch of adjuncts, using roughly the same syllabus, same pedagogical tools, can apply as a group.
  12. Each of us could speak to our department about how to do that.
  13. Mexican history course could still be a course if there is any comparison to the US at all could be both. The frame says that diversity issues of the US.
  14. In the fall 2008, new objective and outcome of GEN ED. We are mandated to review objectives and outcomes every 4 years. Fall 2012, we are mandated to review them again. What will happen to the review of objectives and outcomes, we will throw it out and start over. So at the end of the e-mail, we have to be proactive and if we want to write something to the ad-hoc committee.
  15. Talked about assessment study. Carolyn will send assessment piece to everyone again.
  16. Reach out to our own department to fill out the applications.
  17. Come up with a workshop date for next semester to let people know. Schedule time at a department meeting to explain the process.
  18. Call up Cindy White and see if she would get the WGSS people first.
  19. Tell anyone who is interested that they can contact Paul about the process.
  20. Ad-hoc committee coming up next week. Copernicus?
  21. Events in the past prove that we need this. There is a student liaison to the FSDC (Molly) and she represents Latin American Studies. Could we get the students motivated? Writing for the student publication.
  22. Bob Wolfe… if we want to be heard, we have to be vocal. Maybe we need to go over there in mass. He says that they are doing what they think the faculty want.
  23. Restructure the directions into a 1, 2, 3 process. How to apply for the d-designation….. Could do a shortened version for the curriculum committee website. Carolyn will take care of this.
