Student-InitiatedResearchGrants

PURPOSE

TheStudent-Initiated ResearchGrants providesupport forTrinityundergraduates, under the general supervision of faculty, to develop their own research projects. The research supported bythesegrantsis expected to relateto a student’s thesis, seniorproject, or otherstudent scholarlyactivitysuch asa senior seminar oran independent study. The activities supported might include travel to archives or museums importantto their research,reproduction of research materials, useofanalyticorotherfacilities notavailable at the college, and necessary material resources like computer software.

ELIGIBILITY

Students who plan to undertakeresearch of their own design duringtheir junior orsenioryear and/or thesummer between thesetwoyears.

ELIGIBLECOSTS

Student-initiated research grants up to $2,500maybeused to reimbursedirect research expenses to Trinitystudents. Grant funds maybeused fortravel, livingexpenses, access fees for archives and libraries,photo-reproduction of archival materials, and similar research expenses.

APPLICATIONDEADLINE

Proposals for research to be undertaken in thesummer of2013 orduringthe academicyear of

2012-13 should besubmitted to the FacultyResearch Committeeon orbeforethe stated deadlines. Proposalsmustbesubmitted as PDFdocuments,attached to an e-mail, to Kristin Magendantz, Director ofFacultyGrants()no later than 4:00 p.m. on the deadline date. Late applicationswill notbe considered.

PROPOSAL GUIDELINES

The following guidelinesshould bestrictlyadhered toin preparingproposals:

COVER SHEET: Titleofproject, name, major, facultyadvisor, and anabstract of no more than 100 words.

BODY OFTHE PROPOSAL:In no morethan three (3) double-spaced pages—excluding references, but including figures, tables, andgraphs—explainyour project.Ifsignificant illustration is required, itmaybe attached as an appendix. Include thefollowingsections:

astatement ofthe goalsofyour proposedresearch the significanceofthework

and how theproposedproject fits intoyour long-term course of study

Also explain the procedures or methodsto be used in carryingoutyourresearch anda brief review ofrelevantliterature.

Because this is anexpense program,give specialattention in thebodyoftheproposal to the rationales forbudget items and their relation to the methodsyouwillemploy.

APPENDIX 1: To beprepared bythe facultymember who is the researchadvisor* on the project.

In no morethan onesingle-spaced page,address the followingpoints: Your familiaritywith the student’s work (e.g.,courses taken)

Assessment of the student’s preparation for theresearch project

Feasibilityoftheproject workplan

Plan to monitor thestudent’s progress duringthegrant period and through completion ofthe project

Expected outcomes

This section ofthe proposal should be signed bythefacultyadvisor and dated. Proposals lackingafacultysignature willnot be consideredcomplete.

The completed Appendix 1 should either be1) returned tothestudent tobeincluded in a single, complete PDFdocument; or 2) submitted separatelyas a PDFdocument to Kristin Magendantz.In eitherscenario, the appendixmust be submitted bythe application deadline.

APPENDIX 2:BudgetForm [Available as a Word document on the FRCwebsite]. Anticipated project-related expenses should be detailed on this form, and their relationto the project should be discussed inthebodyof theproposal. A budget narrativeshould be included as part of thebudget summary.
