Associate Professor or Lecturer in International Public Health
Leeds Institute of Health Sciences (LIHS) invites applications for a lecturer/Associate Professor in the Nuffield Centre for International Health & Development (NCIHD). You will contribute to the development of a multi-disciplinary research portfolio, and play a significant role in developing the direction of teaching and learning within international public health. This post therefore represents an exciting opportunity for an individual keen to shape the strategic development of a thriving Academic Centre.
You will contribute to a major research programme within the Centre, and participate in the NCIHD’s innovation and knowledge transfer activities in promoting international health. You will foster appropriate links and collaboration with internal groups and external to the University of Leeds. You will have a Membership of the Faculty of Public Health, or MPH and also a PhD. You will have experience of health service development and delivery experience in international public health in low and middle income countries. Effective interpersonal and time management skills are essential as is the capacity to infuse others with your own enthusiasm and to work successfully as a team member. Effective communication, presentation and administrative skills are also essential.

Purpose of the post
To carry out research, teaching and administration in the field of International Public Health in low and middle income countries within the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health.
Research
· To be actively involved in research in the area of international public health and in particular contribute to the health service delivery research activity of the institute and faculty.
· To establish a record of regular publication of original research at appropriate grade
· To plan and contribute to research projects with advice from senior colleagues
· To provide research supervision and attract research students to the university
· To take part in knowledge transfer activities, where appropriate and feasible
Teaching
· To teach at different levels as appropriate to the post in the area of international public health
· To be involved in the assessment of course work and examinations
· To contribute to the review of modules and programmes and quality assurance mechanisms
· To contribute to the planning and development of modules within the relevant subject area
· To provide personal tutoring for undergraduate and postgraduate students, as appropriate
· To undertake a teaching load as deemed appropriate by the Institute Director/Head of Group and take part in other teaching-related activities, as appropriate, in accordance with University workload agreements
Administration
· To contribute effectively to the administrative process and the committee structures of the Institute, and as appropriate of the Faculty and wider University
· To maintain own continuing professional development
· To act as a mentor to less experienced colleagues
· To maintain a safe work environment, including ensuring compliance with legislation and the undertaking of risk assessments
General duties
· To undertake any other duties commensurate with the post as might be reasonably required
Enhanced duties and responsibilities for appointment at Lecturer Grade 8
· To pursue research of national and international standing and enhance the research activity of the Institute
· To develop a high quality record of regular publication of original research and a high national and international profile
· To provide effective postgraduate research supervision as required
· To pursue and lead research in public health/ service delivery in LMICs of national and international standing and achieve impact on population health
· To be actively involved in service quality enhancement as part of implementation research.
· To develop and lead research proposals for new and collaborative projects consistent with Institute aims and policies.
· To write and present reports, research papers and publications at regional, national and international conferences, consistent with Institute aims and policies
· To act as a referee and contribute to peer assessment
· To be fully involved in the review of modules and programmes and quality assurance mechanisms
· To manage or lead major executive tasks (sustained or one-off projects) which facilitate Institute/Faculty performance or business
· To be actively involved in the management of school/faculty business

· To undertake research-led teaching at different levels on undergraduate and/or postgraduate taught courses, regularly collecting, and responding to, student feedback
· To contribute at an appropriate level to school and faculty policy and practice in teaching, to play a significant role in the design, development and planning of modules and programmes within the subject area as required

Relationships
The post-holder is responsible to Professor Tim Ensor the Head of the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences and Head of the Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development, through whom he/she is accountable to Professor Paul Stewart, the Dean of the Medical School, and also the Dean of the Faculty.

Person Specification
Essential for appointment at Lecturer Grade 7 level
· Either: a PhD and MPH; or specialist training in public health/ primary care and training in research and global/tropical health; or an equivalent.
· Experience in public health/ primary care research, or other discipline related to international public health research
· Experience of health care practice and/or research in LMICs.
· Evidence of ability to contribute to the preparation of research bids
· Evidence of ability to write to a standard required for research reports/publications
· Evidence of publication in peer-reviewed journals
· A research focus that aligns with the research strategy of NCIHD and LIHS
· Experience of teaching adults and/or professional groups (formal or informal teaching)
· Ability to develop own teaching materials, method and approaches with guidance where appropriate
· Excellent organisational skills, experience of managing own workload and ability to work to multiple deadlines
· A high level of interpersonal and communication skills, including written and presentational, and the ability to work as member of a team;
· Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary environment
· Computer literate; conversant with a range of general software including MS Office
· Initiative, motivation and enthusiasm advancing research and service development in international health

Essential for appointment at both Lecturer Grade 8 and Associate Professor Level
· Membership of the Faculty of Public Health, a doctor of public health, or MPH and PhD, or similar high level professional qualification, relevant to public health
· Postdoctoral research experience in the area of International Public Health
· Experience of developing and delivering quality public health programmes/ services in low and middle income countries (LMICs)
· Experience in conducting health service delivery research in the context of LMICs
· A research focus that aligns with the public health/service delivery research strategy of NCIHD, including: communicable and non-communicable disease prevention and care; service delivery within primary care; chronic disease care; community initiatives; urban health; tuberculosis (TB); minimising drug resistance e.g. in TB care.
· A record of obtaining relevant research funding
· A record of high quality relevant publications in peer-reviewed journals
· A track-record of multi-disciplinary collaboration with researchers
· Recent experience of delivering teaching in a related subject to postgraduate students, including the development and delivery of novel teaching material.
· Experience of assessing students’ work and progress of students and giving constructive feedback
· Strong problem solving and negotiation skills
Essential for appointment at Associate Professor Level only
· Experience of and a commitment to the development of high quality research in relevant field.
· A coherent five-year research plan.
· A proven track record as a single or main author of refereed publications of international quality.

Desirable for all levels
· Experience of service development and evaluation, while living in sub Saharan Africa or South Asia (preferably both)

· A proven record of having successfully developed, organised, and taught modules at postgraduate level
· Commitment to own continuing professional development including the successful completion of the University of Leeds Teaching Award: Professional Standard 2 (ULTA-2)
· Experience of undertaking MPH or MSc dissertation supervision
· Experience of undertaking specialist trainee in Public Health and/or PhD supervision
