Tjaden, R.L. 1998-2000. Nutritional Requirement of Loblolly Pines on the Eastern Shore: The Development of State Nutrient Management Standards for Forestry Practices. Research plots were replicated on forest land in Worchester County to determine nutritional requirement of Loblolly Pines at different ages and under different fertilizer rates and material (organic and inorganic fertilizers).
Lynch, Loretta & R. Tjaden. 2000. Willingness of Forest Landowners to Use Poultry Litter as Fertilizer. An econometric model was developed to analyze data collected from a telephone survey of Maryland farmers on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
Tjaden, R.L. 2002. Adoption of Riparian Buffer Technology in a Voluntary Climate: An Analysis of Maryland Farmers’ Socioeconomic Characteristics. PhD Dissertation. A probit model was used to analyze data collected from a telephone survey, performed June 2000, of 411 Maryland farm landowners.
Tjaden, R.L. & Gemstone Students. 2003-2005. Social and Management Issues Surrounding the Mute Swan in Maryland. A research project conducted in cooperation with MD DNR Wildlife Unit to capture, monitor and track Mute Swans on the Tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay. In addition a telephone survey was conducted to measure social attitudes of landowner who live adjacent to waterways and the general public. Results were compared of both audiences and synthesized into a policy report for MD DNR to present to the General Assembly.
Tjaden, R.L., S. Wechsler and A. Martinez-Cruz. 2011-present. An analysis of Maryland Farmers and Tree Farmer’s Knowledge, Attitudes and Entry Point into a Maryland Payment for Ecosystem Service Program. A socio-economic project--contingent valuation and conjoint choice analysis study was developed and mail survey designed and sent to 1,000 farmers and 1,000 Tree Farmers in MD spring 2012. An econometric model was developed and results are currently being analyzed in cooperation with 2 AREC PhD students Seth Wechsler and Adan Martinez-Cruz. This survey will serve as a foundation for future educational grants and policy recommendations. Funding from MAES & Biophilia Foundation
Tjaden, R.L., N. Dawson and D. Rider. 2012-present. Maryland’s Forest Resources in a Dynamic Environment: Assessing the Future Sustainability of Maryland’s Forest Industry. A socio-economic project-this study encompasses three study groups: MD forest landowners; MD loggers; and MD forest industries. Surveys are developed to assess the current status of the forest industry, new product & market opportunities, barriers to success, demographics, and production & profitability. A “confidence index” will be developed and utilized to develop policy recommendations to help the forest industry become sustainable and profitable. Funding from USDA McIntire Stennis.
Paolisso, M., B. Needelman, P. Leisnham, A. Baldwin, and R. Tjaden. 2012 – present. Integrating Socio-Ecological Research and Collaborative Learning to Promote Marsh and Community Resilience on Deal Island. Cooperating with ENST and DNR scientists and faculty in the Anthropology Department of UMCP on a multi-disciplinary research project titled. My role: assist in collecting and analyzing social science data via focus groups of community members on Deal Island and quantify some of the ecosystem services the marsh provides to the community. Funding provided by The National Estuarine Research Reserve System’s (NERRS) Science Collaborative and NOAA.

Plan was presented to board members and later submitted to key legislators in Annapolis to help procure funding to meet selected goals. Resulting from this plan, capital improvement and program funding was obtained from the State of Maryland.

Members represented all program areas of MCE and were appointed by Director of MCE. Performed a needs assessment for environmental and natural resource issues in Maryland. Based on these needs, a 5-year work plan was develop for all MCE faculty to follow and use for reporting.

Develop, collect, manage, and distribute data on a quarterly basis to provide landowners and foresters information on prices paid for timber products known as stumpage prices. Information is derived from quarterly surveys to foresters in MD. It is reported for each of the four regions of the state by tree species or species groups. Report is integrated into educational programs. The report is made available in a printed version mailed to all extension and forestry offices in MD and on a web site ( 3,000 copies are printed and distributed on a quarterly basis.

The course includes reading materials accompanied by over 600 pages of supplemental reference materials. Both are presented in a 3-ring binder. 400 copies were printed with 100 copies being distributed to forestry schools and extension organizations nation-wide and USDA-CSREES. The primary audience is forest landowners. Three hundred fifty-five students have completed the course nationally. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of course, with certificate signed by the Dean, myself and Nancy Stewart (course coordinator).
Forest Management Web Based Course

This course is adapted from the General Forestry Correspondence Course described above, but modified for electronic presentation. Course content is same, but interactive via UMCP ELMS network. Offer twice annually in a parallel timeframe as academic programs—fall (September – December) & spring (February – May). Approximately 85 landowners, professional natural resource managers, teachers have completed the course. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of course, with certificate signed by the Dean, myself and Nancy Stewart (course coordinator).
