Role Overview:
The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) supports ground-based spacecraft telecommunications as part of the international National Aeronautic Space Administration (NASA) Deep Space Network (DSN), under contractual arrangements between the NASA and Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).
The Maintenance Facilities (MF)sectionprovides the technical expertise and engineering management services required to operate and maintain the wide range of technologies used in the radio frequency (RF) and digital data systems located at CDSCC. The section is also responsible for site Information and Communication Technology (ICT) services and the Electronic Systems.
Maintenance & Facilities responsibilities include the installation, test, calibration, modification and repair of the analogue and digital systems required for which it is responsible. In addition Maintenance & Facilities provides site-wide configuration management, quality assurance,and radiation management services, and radio astronomy support. Under the direction from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Maintenance & Facilities may also undertake engineering development work in support of new capabilities to be delivered to the wider DSN.
Within the Maintenance Facilities section there is the Facilities Team. TheFacilities Team maintains and operates site facilities including electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), water and sewerage, landscaping and gardening, building and minor works and vehicle fleet and some site plant.
This position is part of the Facilities Team and works under direction and supervision, the Facilities Traineeperforms basic maintenance and straightforward tasks, and provides assistance and support for senior technicians and tradesmen in more complex facilities tasks and assistance.

Duties and Key Result Areas:
  • Undertake the following facilities maintenance duties:
  • Operate equipment including light trucks, backhoes, mowers, skid steers, forklifts, Elevated work platforms (EWPs), tractors and motorised hand tools.
  • Perform basic maintenance on associated equipment.
  • Perform grounds, lawns and garden maintenance.
  • Assist in heavier landscaping and similar duties operating equipment.
  • Carry out minor repairs to vehicles damaged in accidents.
  • Perform basic building maintenance tasks including gutter clearing and minor painting.
  • Provide information required to complete and update work orders and risk assessments.
  • Wash cars and perform basic mechanical checks including tyre pressures, fluid levels etc.
  • Perform basic fleet maintenance tasks including tyre changes, wheel balancing and alignment.
  • Assist in excavation works including concreting and conduit installation.
  • Perform portable appliance testing.
  • Effectively communication, both orally and in writing, on technical and non-technical matters at team and individual levels across the Complex.
  • Provide assistance to other technician and tradesman:
  • Assist in tasks with tools and materials under direction.
  • Work with carpenter on minor installation works and repairs.
  • Assist electricians during maintenance and installation works.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to carry out tasks under the direction of Senior Technical staff.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues within your team, the business unit and across CSIRO, to reach objectives.

  • Other duties as directed.
Security Clearance
As this site works directly with NASA, the successful applicant will be required to obtain an International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) clearance.
In order to perform the duties of the position, you will need to have access to information provided under technical assistance agreements between CSIRO and United States agencies and organisations. If you are a national or citizen of a country other than Australia, it may be necessary to obtain the specific approval of US government agencies to access the information in order to perform the duties. This approval may also be required if you are assessed as having substantive contacts with countries specified in the US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) that pose a risk of diversion of the information to those countries.

Selection Criteria:
Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.
Pre-Requisites:
  1. Education/Qualifications: Completion of secondary education to year 10.
  2. Other Certifications: Current provisional drivers licence or full drivers licence.
The following pre-requisites will be assessed throughout the recruitment process:
  1. Communication: Ability to communicate in a courteous manner, both orally and in writing, relaying basic facts, responding appropriately, and posing relevant questions to gain information.
  2. Behaviours: Capable of professional and respectful behaviours and attitudes in a collaborative environment.
  3. Adaptability: The ability to effectively manage a number of competing priorities simultaneously, and carry out supervised non-routine tasks.
  4. Problem Solving: Proven ability to investigate clearly defined problems where the alternative solutions are limited and prescribed or apparent.
Essential Criteria:
  1. The ability to read job instructions and follow direction.
  2. Intermediate computer skills using MS Office suite of programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  3. The willingness to undertake or are currently studying a horticultural qualification.
  4. The willingness and ability to learn to operate a variety of hand tools and light plant operation equipment.
Desirable Criteria:
  1. OH&S Induction White Card (General Construction Induction White Card).
  2. Demonstratedexperience using light plant operation equipment.
