Fabdens Chit Chat

September 2003, aged 23

The Bradmore Stud initially bred and showed Welsh Section B ponies, but in 1981, I decided to venture into the Riding Pony World, about which, I admit, I knew nothing.

How fortunate I was to be given the opportunity to purchase Fabdens Chit Chat from her Breeder, Norman Swallow (a well known exhibitor in the past of top class Ridden hunters, and restaurant proprietor).

Her dam, Rosslyn Playful foaled Chit Chat with Mrs Runcie in Scotland, and returned to Fabdens in Hertfordshire with Chit Chat as a yearling, and it was then that I became the proud owner of a very spirited youngster.

She was shown very lightly in youngstock classes, but not covered until the age of five, when I put her in foal to Teilwood Scorpio, a Welsh Section B which I half owned at the time. The result of this mating was Bradmore Nutkin, sold as a yearling to Jean Clark, she won Championships at Ponies UK, National Pony Show, etc, breeding such well known ponies as Whinfell Tom Kitten (Supreme In Hand Royal International) and Whinfell Fairytale a major winner in First Ridden classes. Nutkin was sold to David Puttock in 1994, and continued to breed winning stock such as Deanhills Royal Portrait, Benjamin (Australia), Samuel Whiskers, Royal Jubilee etc, all by Sandbourne Royal Ensign.

Probably the best known of these will be Royal Portrait, who is proving to be a most influential stallion for Robert Cockram, a Horse of the Year Show qualifier as a yearling and sire of numerous Champions at major shows from every crop of foals, including National Pony Society Supreme Champions, Bradmore Toy Soldier, Bradmore Catalena, Henley Down Picturesque, Fenwick Rose Of Tralee, and Thornsett Royal Romance.

In 1987 she produced another filly, B Pipkin by Criffell Caliph, followed by two ‘still born’ foals in 1988 and 1989.

From 1990 onwards she has been a consistent breeder, clicking especially well with Sandbourne Royal Ensign, by whom she produced:-

1991, Bradmore Catkin, an outstanding winner in hand and ridden, including Show Pony Of The Year 1998.

In addition to her ‘Ridden Pony Of The Year’ title, Catkin has been Supreme Champion at Ponies UK both In Hand and Ridden, Supreme In Hand National Pony Show, twice Champion Brood mare at The Royal of England, and in 2002, won the £1,000 Supreme Royal Lancs In Hand Championship.

She has already proved an outstanding broodmare, covered by her ¾ brother, Deanhills Royal Portrait, she has produced: Bradmore Toy Soldier, Champion The Royal, Supreme Youngstock Champion National Pony Show, Supreme Yearling Champion Ponies UK etc, Bradmore Catalena, Supreme Champion National Pony Show, Supreme Champion Midlands In Hand, Champion National Pony Society Area 4

1994, Bradmore Silkin, shown as a yearling winning four of her 6 outings.

1996, Bradmore Tomkin, who went over the 128cms height, but was a good winner in 133cms Show Hunter Pony Classes for Joyce Newbury, including Horse Of the Year Show qualification.

1998, Bradmore Chit Chat, a H.O.Y.S. qualifier as a two year old, Vincent Taylor Riding Pony Breeding National Pony Show, Gilbert Scott Champion of Champions at Ponies UK, and Champion every time out as a broodmare in 2003, including The Royal, Kent County, National Pony Show, etc. and H.O.Y.S. qualifier. Her first foal, by Deanhills Royal Portrait has also met with great success having been Champion at The Royal, Northern Horse etc.

1999, Bradmore Faberge, Supreme Ponies UK, Royal Lancs, Vincent Taylor Supreme Riding Pony Breeding Champion National Pony Show, and H.O.Y.S qualifier. Now under saddle with the Jago’s, her wins include Champion at the British Show Pony Society Champs in 2003.

2000, Bradmore Lalique, Champion Leics County, NPS XI, Whitchurch, etc.

In 2000, I leased Chit Chat to Robert Cockram for two years to continue breeding to Ensign, for whom she produced two fillies;

2001, Deanhills Keepsake, Champion National Pony Show and Royal Lancs.

2002, Deanhills Sensation, a bay filly which is unshown.

In the ensuing years she also produced Bradmore Merlyn and B. Mannikin, both by Bradmore Claudius, and B Pussikin, Bobkin and Peterkin, all by Criffel Caliph.

Chit Chat was unfortunaley empty in 2003, but is now safely in foal to Ensign at the time of writing, at the age of 23, looking ever youthful.

What a faithful mare she has been, a wonderful stamp of a brood mare, with beautiful limbs, scope and conformation, I doubt that I could have been more fortunate in purchasing such an outstanding mare on which to found my Stud. When I look through the National Pony Show results this year, it is quite amasing to read that in the Breeding sections, Fabdens Chit Chat was the dam of the Novice Brood Mare Champion, the 128cms Youngstock Champion, the Reserve Part Bred Arab Champion, Grand-dam of the Novice Foal Champion, Great grand-dam of the Open Foal and Supreme Foal Champion, and is very closely related on the dam line (Rosslyn Sweet Fun) of the 138cms youngstock and overall Riding Pony Youngstock Champion, Deanhills Great Expectations.
