Course Description

This course offers a hands-on exploration of a variety of Printmaking techniques including collagraphs, dry point, woodcut and Century Plates (lithography).

In addition to these techniques students will learn how to generate a repeat pattern and work with collage and transfer of images.

The course is proud to offer a three-day workshop with Master Printer Corinne Rhodes from Cherry Press. Corinne will demonstrate the lithographic process called Century Plates.

Using the etching press in the Printmaking Studio, this intermediate course has a strong experimental component using traditional techniques as a starting point and mixing two or more methods in the same print.

Students will work on a variety of plates and make experimental, painterly images in both black and white, and color. Students will also learn about registration, page layout and the traditional approach of making multiples.

Emphasis will be given on learning techniques and then apply them to your own subject matter and content.

Previous printmaking experience is not required but drawing skills are essential to a good outcome of this course. If you have done Introduction to Printmaking you should build on that experience.

Giving the nature of printmaking techniques, neatness and precision are expected for all works to be completed successfully.

The class will run as a studio/workshop where the proper use of the facilities and tools will be demonstrated and expect to be followed. In addition to the class hours, students have two hours of lab time a week.

The print workshop is used by different classes, please respect the rules of the space and leave it clean when you leave.

Objectives

The objectives of this course are:

·  Familiarization of materials and tools necessary in Printmaking.

·  Understand the different techniques and expressive potential;

·  To experiment with one color and multiple colors and plates;

·  To plan and complete an edition of prints.

Materials and equipment

Most of the materials will be included in the materials fee. In addition to the materials provided, students are required to purchase adequate materials for their assignments and have at least the following:

Sketchbook

Assortment of pencils and pens

Scissors

Ruler

Glue sticks

Masking and clear tape

Cutting knife (box cutter)

All safe-handling procedures for both materials and equipment must be strictly followed including health and safety procedures. Students are expected to respect the equipment and to leave room clean after each class.

Credits, Attendance Policy and Grading:

Four-Credit Course (with four hours of class-time per week)

Success in this 4 credit hour course is based on the expectation that students will spend a minimum of 8 hours of study time per week on average in preparation for class (readings, papers, projects, discussion sections, preparation for exams, etc.).

Students complete most projects in class but will need to prepare materials and work on their projects outside class. In addition to that, LAB hours (2 hours) are part of class and dates/times will be post on week 2. The teaching assistant will be present and students are expected to attend all lab hours and sign in their presence.

Grading is based on performance in the class – on the quality of your effort, on your understanding, creativity and growth as well as quality and skill demonstrated in the completed projects and participation in class.

Students are expected to attend every class during the session.

Attendance has a definite impact on the final grade. More than 3 absences will result in the reduction of the final grade.

Please e-mail me with the reason for your absence prior to the day you will miss class. Also do not arrive late or leave early without permission.

Demonstrations of new techniques are scheduled regularly; students should take notes and participate in the group by asking question and sharing ideas.

Cell phone use is not permitted in class and should be kept inside your bag.
