L: / What’s up, Mandy? Why do you look so thrilled?M: / Did you see the link I shared on Facebook yesterday? The latest craze is rabbit dolls that come in many different colours. They’re fluffy (毛茸茸的) and cute! I’ll buy one after school today.
Y: / I know what you’re talking about. However, didn’t you know that the rabbit dolls are manufactured (生產) using real rabbit fur?
M: / What? Are you serious?
Y: / Of course. I saw that on so many news websites. The SPCA is also appealing (呼籲) to everyone not to purchase those rabbit dolls.
L: / Yes, I’m also aware of that. There is a video that is now going viral on Facebook. It was recorded by PETA (善待動物組織) in China, showing the terribly cruel process of manufacturing the dolls. In the video, living rabbits are tied up and stretched out before workers rip off (撕下) their fur by hand. Afterwards, the rabbits are left in their cages, bleeding, screaming and waiting to die.
M: / Enough! This’s giving me nightmares (惡夢)! I’m definitely not going to buy these rabbit dolls! Now I feel so ashamed (羞愧).
Y: / You didn’t know it and it’s not your fault, Mandy. It’s sad but true that some humans aredoing more harm than good to human civilization (文明) on a daily basis.
M: / Both humans and non-human animals are living things and in no way should we deprive (剝奪) animals of their basic rights and interests, such as living without suffering. Is there anything we can do to help protect the poor animals?
Y: / I suppose all of us can do our part. For example, we should not buy products that are derived from (源於) the body of animals, such as clothes that are made of animal fibre (動物纖維) and ivory chopsticks (象牙筷子).
M: / We should also pay closer attention to news about animal cruelty so that we can boycott (抵制) products like the rabbit dolls.
L: / Absolutely! Also, it seems to me that we can take the initiative (採取主動) to spread the message about animal protection to our friends and family members and alert them to be cautious (謹慎) and not to buy those products. We may try to learn more about animal cruelty in order to share the truth with others. What do you think?
Y: / We can find this kind of information on PETA’s website. Let’s hope that more people become aware of the issue and more animals can be saved.
