Eyejot: Video Clips and Video Email

Overview:

Eyejot is a free (with some advertising) online service that allows you to create a video clip of yourself then either email it to another person or embed the clip in a web page or your WebCT Course. The speed and convenience of sharing video via Eyejot or similar methods allow you to use video in the most timely and relevant manner.

Clips are stored on the Eyejot server (though you can download them if you wish to archive a copy).

For free accounts, the time limit is 60 seconds per clip, with no limit to the number of individual clips.

You will need a webcam and microphone (available from IT for on-campus use).

To create a clip:

  1. Go to
  2. Click the “Join Now” button. Create a free account for yourself
  3. Click on the Messages button
  4. Click on the Inbox tab
  5. Click Compose New Message
  6. Allow program to take control of your camera
  7. Record your video clip (Click the red button to record; all other controls are more self-explanatory)

To Mail the clip to another person

  1. Input the email addresses one at a time into the recipients field and click Add. Note that you must use regular, non-WebCT email addresses.
  2. If you wish to send to a number of Oakton people you can send the clip to yourself and forward to others from your regular mail inbox.
  3. The recipient will get an email with a link to the video in the body of the message. If the recipient also has an Eyejot account, they will see a Reply button and can send a video clip of their own back to you.

To Add the clip to your WebCT Home page (or any web page):

  1. Go to your Eyejot inbox
  2. Select the desired clip. It will appear in the viewer.
  3. Click the Embed Code button
  4. Select and copy the code (drag the mouse across all the code, right-click, choose Copy from the popup menu)
  5. Go to your WebCT home page
  6. Click Add Upper Textblock
  7. Paste the Eyejot code into the larger text field (right-click in the field and chose Paste from the popup menu)
  8. Note: to shrink the size of the video clip on the home page, change the last of the two instances of ‘width="330" height="330" ‘ in the code to something a little smaller)
  9. Any time you update your video you should re-copy the code and swap in the new code for the old in this field.
  10. Add a Text heading and make any desired formatting changes.
  11. Click Update. The video should appear in pause mode.

Notes:

  • You can delete the video from the home page just as you would any other page element.
  • You may follow these same basic steps to insert additional clips in other areas of your course.
  • All clips whether mailed or embedded remain stored on the Eyejot server. If you want to download a clip, go to your inbox to view it then click the save icon (below the viewer & next to the Embed Code icon).
  • Clips stay in your Eyejot inbox for 1 month
  • Want something longer or fancier?

Video files can be created in a similar fashion but using locally installed programs like windows movie maker. IT can help load finished clips onto the appropriate Oakton server and get them linked from your WebCT course or web page.

More elaborate productions may be developed with Oakton’s TV services.

For an Example of an embedded video log in to WebCT at George Spelvin and go to the “Dann’s Video Test” class.
