Extra Information when hiring a nanny

(subject to change)

Employment of a NANNY

Centenary Nannies and Babysitters is merely the recruitment agency (the middle man so to speak). We introduce a variety of nannies to a family where it is then the client/family chooses a nanny they wish to hire. From here a placement fee is payable to Centenary Nannies and Babysitters for our time and resources in recruiting the nannies. From here the terms of employment are between the 2 parties of the newly employed nanny and the family they will be working with. Centenary Nannies and Babysitters takes no responsibility for how the nanny is paid or the terms of employment. We cannot recommend or suggest such advice however we can refer you to certain companies and links on the internet where they may be able to assist in their field of expertise.

Please also note that when we send you a candidates CV bare in mind not everyone is great at writing a CV. Nannying is such a personalised job. It’s much more about the person and personality and ensuring they are the ‘right’ fit with your family.

Some points to consider when hiring a nanny are as follows:

Contracts. Will a contract be drawn up for both parties’ outlining certain areas within the employment? Such points in a contact would be the job description of the nanny, pay and remuneration, holidays, notice of intention to leave, notice of termination, performance reviews probationary periods etc. Centenary Nannies and Babysitters can supply a written contact for both parties to utilize or you can visit or for ‘employment agreements’.

Job description. Outline what it is the nanny is expected to do within their role. Such areas may include outings for the children, communication book/diary (which there is a copy of on the ‘form’s page of our website), domestic duties etc. Domestic duties is an area that should be touched upon with in the initial interview as some nannies do not intend to be the cleaner.

Pay/Remuneration.Firstly you will need to decide as to the payment terms, whether it is weekly, fortnightly, monthly etc. A rate then needs to be negotiated that is agreeable with both parties. An estimate is $23 to $27 per hour for nannies in Brisbane. When discussing rates you need to bare in mind extra for tax, Super and fuel allowances. You need to then work out the method of payment such as cheque, bank transfer to allocated account, cash etc. For more information regarding salary and working conditions please visit For those who wish to withhold a nannies tax and need assistance with payroll you can visit or There are a number of payroll companies you can use these are just two that may be able to help. When a family is responsible for paying a nanny’s Super contribution it is important to discuss whether Super is inclusive of the hourly rate or will be paid on top of the nominated rate.

Income Tax. can help with all information regarding tax and your obligations as an employer or for the nannies working as sub-contractors under their own ABN. The tax tables on the ATO website indicate how much tax needs to be withheld. All nannies will need a Tax File Number (TFN) to gain employment.

Superannuation. All information regarding the payment of Super for the nanny will be found at In short yes you will have to pay 9.5% of the nanny’s gross income per month and pay into their nominated Super fund. You ONLY have to pay this by law if the nanny is employed by you for more than 30hours per week or earns $450 plus per month. Whether the nanny is employed by the family or working as a sub-contractor the client/family by law still has to pay the nanny’s Super contribution. Again all this information will be found at According to on 08/08/12 the 95 Superannuation contributions will be increasing as of 2013 by 0.24% and will increase again in 2014 and 2015.

Workers Compensation. We do recommended taking out Work Cover insurance. WorkCover Qld has a policy called ‘Domestic Household Workers Policy’ which covers the nanny working within the family home.. As at 2015 the policy will be valid for 2 years at a rate of $50. For more information regarding legislation, costs and coverings for this policy visit

Insurances.Nannies may consider taking out their own insurance. This should be discussed with insurance providers. 2 providers that cover nanny insurance are or

Automobile Insurance. If the nanny has to transport the children in a vehicle whether it is their own or utilizing the family vehicle both parties should contact their automobile insurer and ask what they are covered for and what is exempt. Majority of insurers only cover a nanny if they are over the age of 25 when driving the family vehicle so it is important that you speak with your insurer.

Child Care Benefits and Rebates and Registering as a carer. For families to obtain any form of rebate they will need the nanny to register as a ‘registered carer’ through Family Assist/Centrelink. For more information regarding this and the eligibility criteria and forms visit Family Assist may be contacted on 131650 between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday.
