Intonation/ Expression / Student impresses judge with excellent use of intonation and expression, indicating a deep comprehension of the content of the passage. / Student uses intonation and expression in a competent way, demonstrating good comprehension of the content of the passage. / Student uses intonation and expression effectively, but may make some errors. S/he demonstrates a basic comprehension of the content of the passage. / Student is mostly unable to use intonation and expression effectively during the presentation, indicating incomplete comprehension of the content of the passage.
Confidence/ Poise / Student impresses judge with excellent confidence and poise throughout the entire presentation. / Student demonstrates adequate confidence and poise throughout most of the presentation. / Student is confident and poised for some of the presentation, but may also demonstrate some doubt or difficulty. / Student is unable to maintain confidence and poise during the presentation.
Comprehensibility / Student has overall control ofthe passage. S/he is able to recite it in a natural, comfortable manner with no hesitations. / Student is able to read the entire passage, though s/he may hesitate occasionally. / Student is able to get through the passage, though s/he may hesitate frequently. Any student requiring a pronunciation prompt from judge should be automatically placed in the “2” or “1” category. / Student does not maintain control over most parts of the passage and requires multiple prompts in order to compete the reading.
