Expository Essay

Your assignment is to write a five-paragraph essay on the topic assigned to you. Each paragraph must be a minimum of 5 sentences. The purpose of your paper is to get the reader to accept your point of view.

TOPIC: The topic of your paper is George did or did not do the right thing when he shot Lennie at the end of “Of Mice and Men”. You need to have think of three reasons to support your view point.

*The INTRODUCTION (first paragraph) must have a hook or grabber to get the reader’s attention. Ex. “Can you imagine what life would be like without the internet” In your introduction you need to, in four or five sentences tell what the book “Of Mice and Men” was about. End your introduction with a thesis statement: George did/did not do the right thing by shooting Lennie because ______, ______

______, and ______.

*The BODY (middle three paragraphs) must provide evidence to support your opinion. This evidence can be in the form of facts, reasons, examples, details, etc. The body must have effective transitions to show how ideas connect. Begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence: One reason, a second reason, in addition, also, etc.

The conclusion must restate your thesis statement. The conclusion must summarize the main point included in the body. The conclusion must include a personal comment.

Underline the topic sentence in each paragraph

(ex. One reason lunch should be longer for students is…….)

5. Conclusion:

Number each sentence (should have at least five, if not write add more)

Underline the restatement of the thesis

6. Exchange your paper with the person I assign you

7. Read other persons essay

8. Find at least three places in other persons essay for additions. Write add more here

9. Find at least two places where the wording can be made better. Write improve wording here.

10. Return the paper to the person, raise your hand until I have marked your editing points.

11. Make changes to your final copy. Put Changes in Bold

Staple your graphic organizer, draft grade sheet and final copy into a packet and turn in.
