Name: ______

Jayla, Andrea, and Lacey each had a piece of paper. Each girl folded her paper into a different number of equal sections. Jayla folded her paper into 3 equal sections. She colored one section red, one section blue, and one section green. Andrea folded her paper into 6 equal sections. She colored three sections red, one section blue, and two sections green. Lacey folded her paper into 12 equal sections. She colored six sections red, two sections green, and four sections blue. Which two girls had equivalent parts of their papers shaded red? Which two girls had equivalent parts of their papers shaded blue? Which two girls had equivalent parts of their papers shaded green? Draw and shade a picture to represent each girl’s paper. Write a paragraph explaining how you solved the problem.

Explanations will vary. Here is one possible answer.

Andrea and Lacey had equivalent amounts of red. Andrea has 3/6 red, and Lacey has 6/12 red. Two of Lacey’s sections are equal to one of Andrea’s sections. Lacey has double the amount of red sections as Andrea, so the red areas are equal. Jayla and Lacey had equivalent amounts of blue. Jayla had 1/3 red, and Lacey had 4/12 red. One of Jayla’s section covers the same area as four of Lacey’s sections. Jayla and Andrea had equivalent amounts of green. Jayla had 1/3 green, and Andrea had 2/6 green. Two of Andrea’s sections are equal to one of Jayla’s sections.
