Experiment 1: Moisture and Ashing – Friday PM

1:30 pm – Student takes the following items and walk up to SW3 4680.

Part B – Weighing the crucible (PART B)
– Get a desicooler and a pair of tongs.
- Get a porcelain crucible with your tong and transfer to the desicooler.
- Weigh the empty crucible and write down the weight on PART B
datasheet.
- Tare to zero the balance and weigh ~ 0.5 g of coal into the crucible.
- Use your tong and transfer your crucible to the desicooler and walk to
one of the muffle furnaces.
- Put your crucible on the furnace diagram grid paper and write your name
on the grid. (PACK LEFT ® RIGHT and BACK ® FRONT)
- Once the grid is filled, instructor will demonstrate how to put the
crucibles in the furnace.
Part A – Weighing the Aluminum plates (PART A)
- Between you and your partner, get a dessicator with two Aluminum plates.
- Use your tong to transfer the Al plates and weigh the empty Al plates.
- Tare to zero the balance and weigh ~2.0 g of sawdust into the Al plates.
- Use your tong to transfer the Al plates back to the dessicator.
- Carry the dessicator and walk to the drying oven.
- Put your Al plate in the drying oven and put your name on the drying oven grid. (PACK LEFT ® RIGHT and BACK ® FRONT)
2:15 pm - ALL CRUCIBLES AND Al PLATES SHOULD BE IN
THE FURNACE AND OVEN
Lab lecture in SW3 3680
3:15 pm – Students go up to SW3 4680 and assemble by the muffle furnace in
which you placed your sample. With instructor supervision, each
student will take out crucible from the muffle furnace and place it on
mat. – DO NOT PUT HOT CRUCIBLE ON THE GRID
PAPER.
3:25 pm – Transfer crucible to your own dessicooler. Let it cool
for 30 minutes before you weigh.
3:45 pm – Take out the Al plate from the drying oven and put it
inside the dessicooler to cool.
4:00 pm – Weigh your crucible.
4:15 pm – Weigh your Al plate.
