SUFFIELD’S AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

McALISTERINTERMEDIATESCHOOL

EXPANDING HORIZONS, Suffield School’s after-school enrichment program, will once again be offered toMcAlisterIntermediate School students during the fall of 2014. This program is intended to provide intermediate students with interesting and challenging courses in academics, fine arts and technology. Enrolled students will explore new topics of interest, extend their knowledge in a given area, and actively participate in pursuing different pathways to learning.

PROGRAM DETAILS:
  • This is the first session of EXPANDING HORIZONS for this year. It will run from Thurs. Oct.16 through Mon. Nov 24with courses occurring on Monday OR Thursday afternoons.
  • Courses for students in Grades 3-5 will be held at McAlisterIntermediateSchool from 3:20-4:20 p.m.
  • Registration forms are due back to school by Tuesday Oct. 14.
  • All participating students will stay in their classrooms until 3:20 p.m., work on homework, eat their snack (brought from home), and be dismissed directly to their Expanding Horizons location. SNACK WILL NOT BE PROVIDED BY THE SCHOOL.
  • Parents will be responsible for providing transportation home. PLEASE NOTE:Children must be picked up promptly at 4:20 in the gym at McAlister.
/ PLEASE NOTE:
  • It is important that you review and discuss the course offerings with your child carefully. Children enjoy and benefit from enrichment experiences in which they are truly interested.
  • Each course description includes specific days, dates, and fees.
  • A student may register for up to two courses, but a separate check for each course must be included. The course fee includes all course materials.
  • Classes will be taught by teachers or specialists in their fields.
  • Enrollment in all classes is limited and class participation will be done on a first come, first serve basis . If there is insufficient enrollment, a class may be cancelled.

LEGOMANIA Grades 3, 4, & 5 COURSE FEE: $25

Lego games, Lego structures, and Lego free-build! It’s all about Legos, Legos, and more Legos! We have the Legos, you have the creativity!

CARTOONING – Grades 3, 4, & 5 COURSE FEE: $ 25

Come join Mr. Stromoski, nationally renowned cartoonist, and learn how to draw your own REALLY COOL cartoon characters! You will be amazed at the end of each class how many things you can draw all by yourself…maybe you too can become a cartoonist!

CHESS,CHECKERS, & CARDS Grades 3, 4, &5 COURSE FEE: $25

Come join us for a fun-filled afternoon playing the three Cs – Chess, Checkers, and Cards! We’ll play some great games like Life and Crazy Eights! Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced player, we invite you to come enjoy these classic games.

ACTIVE GAMES FOR BOYS– Grades 3 ,4, and 5 COURSE FEE $25

Cooperative games played for FUN and EXERCISE. Participants must wear sneakers and activity clothes. Students will be involved in non-competitive games that require teamwork and problem solving.

YOGA Grades 3, 4, and 5 COURSE FEE:$40

A yoga practice class for kids to foster balance, flexibility and fun! Using breathing exercises, traditional yoga poses and relaxation techniques, we will work on focus, self-respect, and building community. Yoga mat included in fee.

PHOTOGRAPHY! Grades 3, 4 & 5 COURSE FEE: $25

In this 6 session class, you will spend 4 sessions learning about and practicing some photography basics such as: background, shooting from different perspectives, a photographers rule of thirds, how to avoid camera shake, using zoom and “filling the frame” points of interest, tilted horizon, and choosing what to photograph. In the final 2 sessions, the focus will be editing your work and how to take one image and create many looks using an online tool you can access from home. ** PLEASE NOTE: Students participating in this class MUST sign a photo permission waiver (see last page of Expanding Horizons brochure) as well as supply their own digital camera with removable SD card.

CREATIVE CRAFTSfor Grades 3&4 ONLY COURSE FEE: $40

We will make at least two fun and useful projects using your imagination and creativity! Show off your individuality and make some great pieces to share with family and friends! Bring your best crafting thoughts and ideas. All materials included in course fee.
