Unless stated all data relates to full-time, home undergraduates only.

The disability status of 813 people (3.85%) in 2005, 801 people (4.06%) in 2006 and 891 people (3.95%) in 2007 could not be determined

Figure A3:The percentage of disabled applications received by each faculty in 2006/2007.

  • The percentage of applications receiving offers is broadly the same between non-disabled and disabled applicants, except in the case of Creative and Cultural Industries. This is almost certainly due to the different UCAS application process these courses have.
  • The level of applications from disabled people has remained broadly constant throughout the last three years.
  • Creative and Cultural Industries and Science consistently attract a far higher number of applications from disabled students than the other faculties. Between them they account for almost 60% of disabled applications.
  • The faculties of PortsmouthBusinessSchool and Creative and Cultural Industries have a significantly higher percentage of offers being accepted than the other three faculties.

Figure A6:The reasons for withdrawal of disabled and non-disabled home students from across the University in 2006/2007.

  • Disabled home students, Non-Disabled home students and Non-Disabled international students all have comparable withdrawal rates.
  • A 50% greater proportion of disabled students withdrew due to academic failure than non-disabled students in 2006/2007.
  • Non-disabled students are over 50% more likely to withdraw for personal reasons than disabled students.
  • Only four disabled international students withdrew in the year 2006/2007. The reasons were Academic Failure (2) and other personal reasons (2).
  • International disabled students are almost three times as likely to withdraw as disabled home students.

Figure A7:The proportion of disabled and non-disabled students achieving a first or 2:1 degree final classification in 2006/2007.

  • In CCI and Humanities non-disabled students are far more likely to achieve a first or a 2:1 than disabled students. In the other faculties the likelihoods are broadly the same.
  • Foundation degrees made up 3% of all degrees taken by non-disabled students but less than 1% of disabled students. Although Humanities had the highest proportion of foundation degrees (8.1%) Science was the only faculty to have disabled students actually undertaking foundation degreesin 2006/2007.
  • The proportion of disabled students attaining a first or 2:1 degree fell by over a quarter in 2006/2007 on 2005/2006’s figures. This was accompanied by a far smaller fall of around 10% in non-disabled students’ grades.

Non-Disabled / 1469 / 67.73% / 196 / 9.04% / 185 / 8.53% / 165 / 7.61% / 2169
  • The proportion of non-disabled students going into employment each year is roughly consistent, while the disabled category fluctuates far more. However, disabled students have a significantly lower proportion of their number entering employment as a first destination.
  • The proportion of disabled students assumed to be unemployed is similar to that of non-disabled students. This is a dramatic improvement on last year where disabled graduates were twice as likely to find themselves unemployed.
  • The University broadly follows the National picture for first graduate destinations.
  • Technology has a significantly larger proportion of its disabled graduates gaining employment as their first destination (66.67%) than any other faculty. Humanities has the lowest proportion of disabled graduates gaining employment as their first destination but the highest proportion of disabled graduates continuing studies.
  1. Complaints involving disabled students

In the academic year 2006/2007 there were eight official complaints. One student introduced the possibility of a disability affecting his ability to complete his work as requested at the point of the University Secretary review but provided no evidence that he could be affected in the way he suggested, or that any other adjustments should have been made for him. The student has complained to the OIA. No other complaints relating to disability matters were received.
