Student GovernmentExpectations and Commitments
We are pleased and proud that you are interested in serving on the MPHS Student Government Association (SGA). This is a leadership opportunity. As such, more is expected of you than students not serving on SGA. How you behave sets an example for others at MPHS and other students are likely to follow your example. For that reason, we provide you with this document outlining our expectations for your behavior and asking you and your parent(s)/guardian(s) to confirm your firm commitment to meet those expectations.
Any student serving as an SGA officer or member, must remain in good standing in terms of school citizenship, as determined by the SGA Advisor and the Myers ParkHigh Schooladministration. Failure to do so will result first in the implementation of probation and, if repeated, in initiation of the removal process.
Causes for Potential Removal
- (Weighted or Unweighted) semester GPA falling below CMS established minimum of 2.0.
- Actions that jeopardize the integrity of the SGA, the school, or community. Such behavior includes such actions as skipping class, insubordination, dishonesty, violating the MPHS Honor Code, and other behaviors that go against the MPHS Code of Conduct.
- Failure to fulfill the duties as outlined by the Constitution of MPHS SGA.
- Behaving in a manner—either within the class itself or in the school as a whole—in a fashion that does not meet the high standards associated with being a leader.
- Excessive absences from school, as outlined by CMS or from SGA functions and meetings. (See next section below.)
- Receipt of an in-school and/or out-of-school suspension. In such situations, class status will be determined on a case-by-case basis by the SGA Advisor and the MPHS Administrative Team.
Attendance - Each member of SGA is expected to attend all formal events. Events are customarily planned with more than two weeks’ notice, so all members should be able to arrange their schedules accordingly to attend. If a member cannot attend an event, he/she must follow the guidelines outlined below in Sections A and B. If a member fails to attend a formal event without following the expectations outlined below, he/she will receive a zero for that event. If a member misses more than three mandatory events, he/she will immediately be placed on probation.
A. Excused Absences
- Valid excuses must be provided by the absentee to the SGA President and approved by the SGA Advisor.
- Valid excuses from SGA events and meetings must be written and include the signature of a parent/guardian.
- The following represent examples of valid excuses, but this is not an exhaustive list:
A. Sickness
B. Death in family
C. Family trips
D. Academic Competition/School Athletic Competition.
E. Religious Holidays
F. Medical Appointments*
G. Work – only if the event or meeting is planned less thantwo weeks prior to date of conflict
*A member may miss no more than three class periods or events due to medical appointments.
B. Unexcused Absences
- If a written excuse is not provided to the SGA President and Advisor within two days after the event or meeting, or upon return to school, the absence is classified asunexcused.
- If the excuse is not included in this Article, Section A or B, then the Advisor will determine whether the absence should be classified as excused or unexcused.
- The following is a list of examples of invalid or unexcused absences, but does not list all possibilities:
- Club meetings
- Athletic or academic practices*
- Personal decisions or situations not outlined as excused
- Work – only if the event or meeting is planned more than two weeks prior to the date of conflict.
*This does not include athletic competitions (see Section A.) In addition, an SGA member may miss no more than three events due to athletic practices per athletic season before such absences become unexcused.
Please return this page signed by parent(s)/guardian(s) & student to Ms. Cates by the first day of class.
