Library

Title: ACCSP Metadata Library

Abstract: The ACCSP is a cooperative state-federal program to design, implement, and conduct marine fisheries statistics data collection programs and to integrate those data into a single data management system that will meet the needs of fishery managers, scientists, and fishermen. The ACCSP will be the source of fisheries statistics on the AtlanticCoast. The ACCSP will be efficient, informative, user-friendly, and reliable. The Program will contribute to the restoration and sustainability of marine fisheries.

Purpose:

1) To provide information on all state and federal marine fisheries-dependent data collection programs on the Atlantic coast that are accessible through the ACCSP data warehouse.

2) To provide information on data collection and management applications created and maintained by the ACCSP.

3) To provide links to the owners of the various data sets that are contained within the ACCSP data warehouse.

4) To provide links to other fisheries-independent data collection programs that are conducted by ACCSP state and federal partners.

Data Set

Title: Hawaii Longline Logbook

Abstract: This data set contains the logbook data of U.S. longline vessels based in Hawaii from 1990 to the present that fish in the northern central Pacific (120° W - 170° E and 50° N - 20° S). Tunas (Thunnus spp.) are the dominant species of the longline catch. Swordfish and blue shark were also numerous in the longline catch prior to April 2001. In addition, there are approximately 10 - 15 other Pelagic Management Unit Species (PMUS). Since April 2001, there have been numerous regulation changes that affect the catch and effort and fishing area of the fleet; the point of contact should be contacted for more information.

Purpose: The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council (WPRFMC) developed the fishery management plan (FMP) to manage the pelagic resources authorized by the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976. This FMP, which regulates the U.S. domestic fisheries for tuna, swordfish, marlin, and other pelagic species within the western Pacific U.S. Exclusive Economic Zones, was first implemented by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS), on March 23, 1987. The Federal longline logbook program was implemented by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in November 1990. Logbooks are filed by all operators of fishing vessels conducting longline fishing operations on the High Seas and within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone in American Samoa, Guam, Hawaii, the Northern Mariana Islands, and U.S. possessions in the western Pacific and offloading in U.S. ports. The data are confidential and can only be presented in summarized form to the public. However, researchers with appropriate clearance can access the more detailed data.

Title: UFA Sampling Data

Abstract: Between 1984 January - 2002 June, personnel from NMFS/PIFSC/FMSD/FMEP and HDAR conducted port sampling at the United Fishing Agency (UFA) Fish Auction. They recorded the total landing at the UFA Fish Auction, with a frequency of six times a week during the earlier years to twice a week during the later years. In 2000 January, HDAR implemented a Dealer Data collection procedure that receives reports from the fish dealers that are more complete and covers more than just the auction. This Dealer Data takes the place of the UFA Sampling Data, and after a 2.5 year overlap, the collection of the UFA Sampling Data was discontinued in 2002 June. The HDAR Dealer Data is archived and documented separately.

Purpose: The data collected at the auction was not intended to be an accounting of the complete landings of any kind. It was an attempt to record the total landings on any given sampling day, which ranged from two to six times a week. This sampling contains information on the price per pound and quantity sold, and could be used to provide a size structure (weight frequency) by species. The data are confidential. NMFS researchers with appropriate clearance can access the detailed data.
