An example itinerary is:

Day 1: Afternoon – Kata Tjuta and Uluru Sunset

Travel to the mystical 36 domes of Kata Tjuta. On the way, enjoy panoramic views of the southern side of Kata Tjuta. Continue on before arriving at the base of Walpa Gorge. Spend some time exploring the gorge and the unusual conglomerate rock formations. The walking trail through Walpa Gorge follows the natural creek between two of the tallest domes of Kata Tjuta. In the late afternoon we travel to the Uluru sunset viewing area. Witness and photograph the striking colour changes of Uluru at sunset whilst enjoying nibbles and a glass of wine.

Day 2: Morning - Uluru Sunrise & Sacred Sights

Rise early this morning to travel to the Uluru sunrise viewing area, Talinguru Nyakunytjaku. Watch the first rays of the sun set the Red Centre alight while enjoying a warming cup of tea or coffee and biscuits. After watching the sunrise you will join your AAT Kings Driver Guide for a tour around the base of Uluru. Travel by coach to the Mutitjulu Walk where you will be escorted to the beautiful Mutitjulu Waterhole. View Aboriginal rock paintings and learn about the area as your Driver Guide indicates some native flora and explains the Aboriginal and European history of Uluru. Visit the Uluru – Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre, where you can learn about Aboriginal culture and see Aboriginal arts and crafts, before returning to Ayers Rock Resort. On days when the Uluru Climb is open, those with a good level of fitness will have the opportunity to climb Uluru as an alternative to the Mutitjulu Walk. Return to Ayers Rock Resort.

Day 1: Afternoon - Kata Tjuta Valley of the Winds

Travel to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) where you’re AAT Kings Guide will explain the geological history of these giant domes. Your Guide will then escort you on a 2-3 hour walk in the valley between the massive red conglomerate rocks. The walking path is rocky and requires a good level of fitness. Marvel at the unique flora and fauna that has survived in this harsh environment. When you reach the Valley of the Winds Lookout, take some time to gaze out over the central valley of Kata Tjuta. Then take in a magnificent outback sunset at Kata Tjuta while you enjoy a complimentary glass of Australian wine.

Day 2: Morning - Uluru Sunrise Guided Cultural Walk

Travel to the sunrise viewing area at the eastern end of Uluru. Watch the first rays of the sun set Uluru and the red centre alight while enjoying a warming cup of tea or coffee and biscuits. After sunrise, join your guide for your cultural tour. On the way from Kuniya Piti, a sacred site at Uluru your Guide points out the natural features of the landscape, Aboriginal rock paintings, relays traditional Aboriginal stories and explains the geological formation, Aboriginal history and flora and fauna unique to this area. Once at Mutitjulu waterhole, board your coach and continue your tour around the circumference of this massive rock with commentary from your Guide. Take a break for morning tea an visit the Uluru – Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre. Choose to stay at the Cultural Centre or for those who are still keen, accompany your guide to Mala Walk, Continue through Kantju Gorge, where after rainfall water can cascade over the side of Uluru and plunge some 90 metres to the ground. You will be rewarded with an AAT Kings Souvenir Certificate before being transferred to Ayers Rock Resort.

Travel from Ayers Rock Resort to the Uluru sunset viewing area. Enjoy nibbles and a complimentary glass of wine as the sun sinks over the western horizon and the evening sky brings out the many shades of colour for which Uluru is famous. Don’t forget your camera! It is recommended that you photograph Uluru every 5 minutes to really capture the gradual colour changes of the rock. Occasionally, when it rains, you may be lucky enough to see the spectacular sight of water cascading over the sides of Uluru.

Uluru Sunset Additional Options

Y11B - After sunset guests are transferred to AAT Kings’ exclusive barbecue site with their Guide. The site is within the Uluru National Park, outside the Cultural Centre set amongst red sand dunes and desert oak trees providing a peaceful desert setting. The site is located far enough away from the resort lights so that there is a clear view of the stars in the southern sky. Once at the site, guests will be served a variety of Australian meats and salads, accompanied by a glass of sparkling wine or orange juice (menus are subject to change). After dinner, guests will be served tea, coffee and biscuits and the guide will conduct a tour of the night sky, describing and pointing out some of the visible constellations with the assistance of a high beam spotlight (weather permitting). The Guide will also explain some Aboriginal stories that relate to the stars before returning to Ayers Rock Resort.

Travel from Ayers Rock Resort to Kings Canyon, stopping for breakfast at Kings Creek Station (included) along the way. Make the rocky climb to the rim of the canyon for marvellous views of Watarrka National Park. Follow the rim of the canyon stopping to look down into the canyon gorge at look-out points. Time permitting, you may choose to descend into the green oasis of the 'Garden of Eden'. The circuit walk takes approximately 3 hours to complete and is rocky and steep in parts. It is recommended for those with a good level of fitness. Alternatively, you may wish to take an easier, shorter walk to explore the boulder strewn canyon floor. After lunch (own expense), return to Ayers Rock Resort (Y19) or Alice Springs (Y20).
