PRAY!

Hope at the Margins

“The perspective of Christian hope changes everything. It changes our attitudes to living on the margins, and it changes our attitudes to our time, money, and careers, freeing up resources for mission.”

Hope Set

  • 1 Peter 3:18 – 18For Christ also suffered oncefor sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.He was put to death in the bodybut made alive in the Spirit.
  • 2 Corinthians 1:8-11 – 8We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experiencedin the province of Asia.We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself.9Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God,who raises the dead.10He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hopethat he will continue to deliver us,11as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thankson our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

Shaped by Hope

  • 1 Peter 4:1-5 – Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.2As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.3For you have spent enough time in the pastdoing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.4They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.5But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
  • 1 John 2:15-17 – 15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Fatheris not in them.16For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.17The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of Godlives forever.

Hope is the Reason

  • 1 Peter 4:7-11 – 7The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mindso that you may pray.8Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.9Offer hospitalityto one another without grumbling.10Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,as faithfulstewards of God’s grace in its various forms.11If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides,so that in all things God may be praisedthrough Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

(By His Grace, For His Glory, For the Benefits of Others, For the Joy of All)

  • Colossians 3:14 – 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
  • 1 Corinthians 13:13 – 13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Unstoppable Hope

  • 1 Peter 4:12-19 – 12Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on youto test you, as though something strange were happening to you.13But rejoiceinasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ,so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.14If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.15If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.16However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.17For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household;and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?18And,

“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”

19So then, those who suffer according to God’s willshould commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

  • Hebrews 12:1-3 – Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us runwith perseverancethe race marked out for us,2fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneerand perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow wearyand lose heart.

Hope in Humility

  • 1 Peter 5:1-7 – To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elderand a witnessof Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:2Be shepherds of God’s flockthat is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;3not lording it overthose entrusted to you, but being examplesto the flock.4And when the Chief Shepherdappears, you will receive the crown of glorythat will never fade away.

5In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselvesto your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humilitytoward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”

6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.7Cast all your anxiety on himbecause he cares for you.

  • Humble Leaders
  • 1 Peter 5:1-4 – To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elderand a witnessof Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:2Be shepherds of God’s flockthat is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;3not lording it overthose entrusted to you, but being examplesto the flock.4And when the Chief Shepherdappears, you will receive the crown of glorythat will never fade away.
  • Matthew 20:25-28 – 25Jesus called them together and said,“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.26Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,27and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—28just as the Son of Mandid not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransomfor many.”
  • Humble People
  • 1 Peter 5:5 – 5In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselvesto your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humilitytoward one another, because,

  • 1 Peter 5:6-7 – 6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.7Cast all your anxiety on himbecause he cares for you.

Hope of Glory

  • 1 Peter 5:8-11 – 8Be alert and of sober mind.Your enemy the devil prowls aroundlike a roaring lionlooking for someone to devour.9Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

10And the God of all grace, who called youto his eternal gloryin Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.11To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

  • Romans 5:1-5 – Therefore, since we have been justifiedthrough faith,we[a]have peacewith God through our Lord Jesus Christ,2through whom we have gained accessby faith into this grace in which we now stand. And weboast in the hopeof the glory of God.3Not only so, but we[c]also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;4perseverance, character; and character, hope.5And hopedoes not put us to shame, because God’s lovehas been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
