Drugaid is a substance misuse service, helping individuals and communities tackle drug and alcohol problems in South Wales.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Post: European Social Fund Young Persons Mentor

Reports to: Young Persons Senior Mentor

Contracted Hours:37hrs per week

Salary: £18685 per annum

Office Base:Cardiff/Barry or Pontypridd/Merthyr (The office base will shared between both areas depending on service demand)

Date: Until August 31st 2018

Holidays:

Gofal: 26 days annual leave plus bank holidays.

Holidays increase by 1 day for each year of service up to a maximum of 30

Drugaid: 25 days plus bank holidays.

Background:

The Out of Work Service (OOWS) is delivered in partnership between Gofal and NewLink Wales; across the Cardiff and Vale and Cwm Taf Health Board areas providing individualised mentoring and support for people who have been affected by Substance Misuse and/or Mental Health issues. We are now pleased to have extended this partnership to Drugaid who are supporting the extension of this service to those aged 16 -24. Gofal will be employing the Cardiff and Vale team, with Drugaid employing the Cwm Taf team. All employees will be line managed by Gofals existing Out of Work Service leadership team.

The OOWS complements and enhances existing treatment, support and care services, through the provision of additional mentoring support; that focusses on helping people to move on and thrive through inspiring self-confidence, nurturing self-reliance, developing new skills, acquiring qualifications and ultimately achieving economic independence through paid employment.

The Young Persons Mentor will be responsible for engaging and maintaining a caseload of young people 16-24 years, who are seeking education, training or employment, into the Out Of Work Service undertaking one-to-one mentoring and group support as required to remove barriers and facilitate progress into training, education and employment.

The scheme has been supported by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government.

Job Purpose:

Provide individualised mentoring support to people aged between 16 - 24 affected by mental health and/or substance misuse problems, to enable and advance the achievement of skills development, qualifications, volunteering and employment.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate engagement of young people 16-24 years who are NEET onto a range of in-house and external programmes aimed at the advancement of Employment, Education and Training. This shall include working closely and developing excellent working relationships with community, statutory and voluntary organisations within the area.
  • Undertake assessments of barriers to employment, education and training that uncovers existing achievements, skills and strengths, interests and goals as well as barriers.
  • Develop and implement individual action plans to overcome barriers: outlining strength based goals and actions to achieve outcomes, with referral to, and liaison with specialist community, statutory and voluntary provisions where required to assist the individual in overcoming identified barriers.
  • Monitor and track individual progress, providing up to date information in line with ESF requirements.
  • Provide transitional ‘Soft Landing’ support for participants who enter into employment or other structured activity after leaving the OOWS service.
  • Support the Single Point of contact as required.

Team Working

  • To seek advice and support from Line Manager as necessary in delivery of support.
  • To assist in the development of a volunteer programme.
  • To liaise with other agencies with and on behalf of beneficiaries as part of planned support.
  • To attend and participate in team meeting.
  • To attend and participate in local community events to promote the service.
  • To support and assist the other members of the OOWS team

  • To keep accurate notes of all support provided in line with organisational and ESF requirements.

Person Specification: Young Persons Mentor

Essential / Desirable
A successful track record of providing direct support to individuals aged 16 – 24 from vulnerable or marginalised groups. / 
A thorough understanding of the barriers to training, education and employment faced by people affected by mental health and/or substance misuse. / 
A proven competence of working within the field of youth work, education, training or employability / 
Experience of supporting people with substance misuse and/or mental health issues. / 
Lived experience of substance misuse or mental health issues. / 
An understanding of current legislation and policy in relation to substance misuse and mental health for people aged 16 - 24 / 
Experience of working in an ESF funded project or similar. / 
The ability to compile, maintain and complete accurate written records. / 
