After your 102/101 and 202 courses, you will have accumulated a total of 84 hours in your chosen third language. It is time to reflect on your overall progress during this time. The European Portfolio booklet has given you a first opportunity to reflect on your achievements so far. This final reflection will help you to go one step further. Think about your work during this semester (and before if you took the 101 or 102 course) and reflect on these four points for each skill i.e. Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing:
- What I can do at this stage (give some concrete evidence i.e. examples, details):
1) SPEAKING: “When I spoke to a Spanish speaking person, I was able to understand and answer basicquestions, for instance, talking about my family and my hobbies and the place where I live”
2)LISTENING: “ When I listen to a Spanish song or Spanish radio online I am able to recognize words I have learnt in class before”
3) READING: “I am able to surf through Spanish websites, understanding some of the things written
there”
4) WRITING: “I was able to write a very simple postcard to my Mexican friend telling him/her about my holidays last summer”
- What I have learned about studying methods during the course:
“I have learned to use internet resources to practise Spanish. In particular, I know where to look to find out the pronunciation of phonemic symbols in Spanish, and therefore I can have a go at pronouncing new words from their phonetic transcription in the dictionary”
- What area(s)/skill(s) I have enjoyed most and why:
“I took Spanish courses because I really wanted to develop my speaking skills before I go to Spain in the summer with my best friend. So I have enjoyed Speaking most during class and learning some very concrete Spanish expressions and sentences which I hopefully will be able to use in Spain”
Finally, think about the future (last row):
- How useful my third language experience might be for me in the future and how I intend to continue learning it
As I said above, Spanish will immediately be useful for me this summer, but I also intend to apply for jobs in Spanish companies which are represented in Hong Kong or South China. So learning Spanish is a long term project for me and I need to continue learning it. After leaving Lingnan, I plan to enrol in more advanced Spanish courses in Hong Kong.
