Intro

Brussels, 15th April 2015. Following a campaign launched last month by the S&D Group, the European Parliament today in Brussels solemnly recognised the genocide of Roma that took place during World War II and declared that a "European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day" should be dedicated to remember the 500,000 Roma people who were exterminated by the Nazis.

“Several countries in Europe do not follow European law regarding minorities. In some countries, minorities do no have access to education, housing or other facilities. In that regard, I would like the European Parliament to put more pressure on those countries».

«First of all, we need the European politicians to recognize anti-gypsyism as a special form of racism towards the Roma people».

«The victims and their suffering during the holocaust and the World War II will be recognized with a special day for Roma holocaust. That is the 2nd of August».

«We have to work on two sides. Towards the Roma community but also towards the mainstream society, because the mainstream society has been fed with stereotyped pictures and prejudices during 800 years».

At least 500,000 Roma were exterminated during World War II. In some countries, more than 80% of the Roma population were exterminated. From 2 to 3 August 1944, 2897 Roma were killed in the Zigeunerlager camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
