Euro area production in construction down by 1.2%

Down by 0.3% in EU28

In October 2013 compared with September 2013, seasonally adjusted production in the construction1 sector fell by 1.2% in the euro area2(EA17) and by 0.3% in the EU282, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In September 20133, production in construction decreased by 0.5% and0.7% respectively.

In October 2013 compared with October 20124, production in construction declined by 2.4% in the euro area and by 0.8% in the EU28.

Monthly comparison

Among the Member States for which data are available for October 2013, production in construction fell in six androse in eight. The largest decreases were observed in Spain (-2.9%), Slovakia(-2.3%) and Germany(-1.7%), and the highest increases in Slovenia (+7.6%), theCzech Republic (+7.2%) and Romania (+4.0%).

Building construction fell by 0.8% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the EU28, after -0.4% and -0.5% respectively in September 2013. Civil engineering decreased by 1.5% in the euro area, but roseby 1.1% in the EU28,after -0.8% and-2.1% respectively in the previous month.

Annual comparison

Among the Member States for which data are available for October 2013, production in construction fell in six, remained stable in Germany and rose in seven. The largest decreases were registered inPortugal (-15.1%), Bulgaria (-7.9%), Slovakia (-5.0%) and Poland (-4.3%), andthe highest increases in Slovenia (+27.3%), Hungary (+10.7%), Romania (+7.6%) and the United Kingdom (+5.1%).

Building construction dropped by 2.2% in the euro areaand by 0.7% in the EU28, after -0.4% and +1.4% respectively in September 2013. Civil engineering fell by 3.4% in the euro areaandby 1.7% in the EU28, after
-2.1% and -3.6% respectively in the previous month.

1. The index of production in construction approximates the evolution of the volume of production within the sector, broken down into building construction and civil engineering. Seasonally adjusted euro area and EU series are calculated by aggregating the seasonally adjusted national data. Eurostat carries out the seasonal adjustment of the data for those countries that do not adjust their data for seasonal effects. The monthly index as presented in this News Release is calculated only on the basis of the data of those countries reporting monthly data. Missing observations from Member States for recent months are estimated for the calculation of the euro area and the EU.
