ESSEX BRIDLEWAYS ASSOCIATIONTREC GB COMPETITION

4TH AND 5TH JULY 2015

at

Berwick Farm,

Berwick Lane, Stanford Rivers, Chipping Ongar.

CM5 9PY

What is TREC?

TREC is a fun riding event comprising of three phases, Orienteering, Control of Paces and Obstacles. The competition involves the skills and situations a rider might encounter on a hack, including map reading (using maps usually 1:25000 scale).

The three phases

For those of you that are not familiar with TREC, it is made up of three phases. You are marked on how well you carry out each test. It is all very low key and friendly, the idea is to take part and have fun.

1. The POR route (Orienteering)With the aid of a map and a record card you will find your way around a pre-determined course via a number of check points. It is not a race, the aim is for you to prove you can find the correct route as close to a specified time as possible. Don’t worry if you get lost we will find you.

2. The COP (Control of Paces)(now MA) is a test to determine the rider’s control of their horse’s paces along a 2- 4 metre corridor between 50 to 150 metres long. Firstly there is a slow canter followed by a fast walk.

3. The PTV (Obstacles) There will be 16 obstacles for you to negotiate. These will be things like walking between a zig-zag of poles, rein back between two poles, open and shut a gate, etc. all very simple things that you might come across on a hack. You can leave out any you really don’t want to do but you will lose the marks for that obstacle. A list of the obstacles to be used at this competition will be displayed at the secretary’s area.

Information on TREC can be found on the TREC GB website:

Course Walk & Briefing Session

On Saturday evening there will be a briefing for competitors and for volunteers who are new to TREC at 5.30pm; and a course walk of the obstacles for all at 6pm; followed by a fish and chip supperand a pudat 7.30pm. It will be great for everyone, especially those doing level 1, to come to these events, meet your fellow competitors and enjoy a friendly evening – and maybe stay overnight if you want to make a weekend of it.
