Lab Report: Unknown Hydrate Lab

1)Title page: (1 pt) includes the name of the lab, your name, names of your partners, dates of the lab, date of report.

2)Abstract: (3 pts) a brief (1 paragraph) summary of the purpose, general method and steps followed in doing your experiment. Summarize the results in general terms.

3)Purpose: (1 pt) a short description of the problem being investigated or the specific question you are trying to test (usually given by the instructor).

4)Theory: (5 pts) discuss the theory of the experiment (i.e. background information such as the definition of a hydrate, explanation of why we heated it up, explanation of reason for heating to “constant mass,” etc.); give references to literature when appropriate.

5)Setup, Materials, & Method

  1. Labeled diagram on set up (2 pts)
  2. An alphabetized list of materials (1 pt)
  3. A step-by-step list of the detailed procedures someone could follow to repeat the experiment. Include safety precautions if needed. (2 pts)

6)Results/Data: Data in clearly labeled in a table (4 pts)

7)Calculations: Clearly label and show work for calculations #1-3.

  1. Determination of hydration number (3 pts)
  2. Formula and molar mass of compound (2 pt)
  3. % error (1 pt)

Format that this section so that headings and answers stand out. Equation Editor works best for this; if you don’t use this application you still must type your calculations.

8) Discussion/Conclusions:

  1. Restate purpose of this lab (1 pt)
  2. Summarize method followed (brief… 1-2 sentences) (2 pt)
  3. Restate results (hydration #, formula & name) (3 pts)
  4. Compare your results with accepted and state % error (2 pt)
  5. Explain at least three sources of error in this experiment and describe how each source of error could have affected your data. To be thorough, state how you could improve these procedures to yield better results if given the change to repeat this lab. (3 pts)

9)Answers to questions

  1. How much hydrate to get 92.3 g anhydrous salt? (3 pts)
  2. How much anhydride from 150 g of hydrate? (3 pts)

10)Presentation Entire lab report is typed. Sections are clearly labeled. Effort has been put into the report. (3 pts)

TOTAL POINTS: 45 Lab Report DUE:______

NO LATE LAB REPORTS will be accepted for ANY reason. If you are absent on the due date, I expect you to email me your lab report. I have access to both Mac and PC versions of Word. If your lab report is not a Word document, save it as a PDF and email me that. NO LABS WILL BE ACCEPTED LATE FOR ANY REASON!

A note on lab partners: Laboratory partners discuss experimental results and share ideas, but the written report represents your own work, not that of a group…DON’T LET OTHERS DO YOUR THINKING AND ANALYSIS!! Partners’ data will, of course, consist of the same sets of numbers, but each partner will organize the report to suit his or her own personal tastes and style. Each will do the data analysis independently. NEVER EMAIL YOUR REPORT to another students under any circumstances. What is turned in needs to be your work only. Otherwise, it will be considered academic dishonesty.
