Essay #4 – Contrast Essay
You will be writing a Contrast Essay using the same topic as you used for your descriptive essay. For this assignment though, you will contrast your topic with something else of a similar nature but with some difference: the same topic at a different time of day, or time of the year, or contrast fantasy (dream house) versus reality (your current home). For example, the sample essay you’ll look at will contrast the diner at midnight (the descriptive topic already written about) with the diner at noon. You must complete pre-writing, an outline, a rough draft, revision plan and final draft. And remember, this still needs to be DESCRIPTIVE.
The essay must have a thesis statement with a plan of development at the end of the introduction. Each supporting paragraph must begin with a topic sentence that connects back to the thesis (unity). You must include strong detailed examples to support each point (adequate support). Clear organization also is essential in a contrast essay. Check the Contrast Essay handout for guidance. Paragraphs should be arranged in a logical order and ideas must be connected with transition words or phrases (coherence). Finally, your sentences must contain FEW spelling or grammar errors.
FORMAT: The rough draft and final draft must be 2 ½ to 3 pages, typed, double spaced in 12 pt. font with a one inch margin.
ROUGH DRAFT DUE DATE:______– You must bring TWO copies of the rough draft to receive credit.
FINAL DRAFT DUE DATE: ______– You must turn in your final draft with accompanying materials, including an extra copy of the final draft in order to receive full credit. YOU MUST BRING TWO COPIES OF THE FINAL DRAFT TO RECEIVE FULL CREDIT.
Any failure to meet the deadlines above will result in a ten point deduction from the final grade for the essay. That is TEN POINTS OFF for each deadline or requirement missed.
