ESP I Examen Final Topic Sheet

Below you will find the topic list of everything that will be covered on the final exam. THIS EXAM IS CUMULATIVE, SO EVERYTHING FROM 1ST SEMESTER and 2ND SEMESTER WILL APPEAR ON THE EXAM IN SOME FORM.

Format of Exam: 100 questions multiple-choice, plus 15 bonus questions. The bonus will cover culture and be an extension of the regular exam. BONUS WILL REQUIRE YOU TO WRITE OUT ANSWERS ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER IN ENGLISH AND IN SPANISH.

REMEMBER: A LARGER PORTION OF YOUR EXAM (ROUGHLY 20-25 QUESTIONS OR MORE) WILL COVER THE CHAPTER 4 MATERIAL (FOOD). EVERY OTHER TOPIC WILL BE DISCUSSED WITH A FEW QUESTIONS HERE AND THERE.

1ST SEMESTER MATERIAL

  1. The alphabet, sounds, and vowels/consonants (spelling words, how words are pronounced, etc.)
  2. Greetings, goodbyes, and basic get-to-know you questions (Where do you live? Where are you from?, How old are you?)
  3. Classroom objects/furniture, school subjects, and school schedule terms (1st period, 2nd period, etc.)
  4. Commands (the ones I use in class for directions)
  5. Question words in various questions (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How, How many, How much, etc.) and the terms ‘because’ and ‘also’.
  6. Dates (months, days of the week, years—ones we know)
  7. Weather expressions and seasons (a lot of the ones that are basic, but also a few that are in your notes and are more complex, like it’s thundering and lightning)
  8. Time
  9. Body Parts
  10. Family terms
  11. Physical and personality descriptions
  12. Subject pronouns and the verbs SER, ESTAR, and TENER (SER VS. ESTAR TOO—There will be a question involving why ser is used instead of estar and vice versa with respect to food.)
  13. Gender/number agreement with adjectives
  14. Possessive adjectives (my, his, her, your, our, their, etc.)
  15. Emotions with ESTAR
  16. Location terms with ESTAR (used more with directions, but may be used with the house vocabulary or used in a paragraph)
  17. Tener expressions (tengo sed, tengo hambre, tengo frío, tengo calor, tengo miedo de…, tengo sueño, tengo suerte)
  18. Definite and indefinite articles (definite- el/la/los/las, indefinite- un/una, unos/unas)
  19. –Ar, -er, and –ir regular verb conjugations with the subject pronouns

2ND SEMESTER MATERIAL

  1. Numbers 1-100 AND Numbers above 100 (You will see numbers throughout the exam in word format, so be sure to brush up on them if you do not feel comfortable with them yet.)
  2. House vocabulary and Chores Vocabulary (including materials terms—wood, bricks, etc.)

a. What are the rooms in the house? What are certain items/furniture/appliances in the house? What chores do people do in the home? (You may have a paragraph about the house on your exam and some true/false questions.)

  1. Hobbies Vocabulary (What hobbies do people do in their free time? These may be in sentences where you have to determine what kind of hobby is best suited for the person OR used in a paragraph. ‘Tengo ganas de’- I feel like… is often used with these.)
  1. Tener que (‘to have to’) and Hay que (‘one must…’)—used in paragraphs/sentences/questions throughout
  1. Frequency terms (used throughout)
  1. Directions (location/place terms)- You will have to read a map and answer questions about how to get from one place to another.
  1. Stem-changing verbs (empezar, cerrar, entender, pensar, preferir, querer, decir, pedir, servir, medir) - These will be used throughout, but you may have some questions where you need to identify the correct conjugation.
  2. The verb ir and the irregular yo verbs (saber, poner, traer, salir, conocer, dar, etc.)- you will have to identify the correct conjugation for these verbs.
  1. Clothing vocabulary, materials, and shopping verbs (you will need to describe an outfit and read paragraphs about clothing and shopping in general)- DON’T FORGET TO BRUSH UP ON COLORS.
  1. Gustar, Encantar, Interesar, Fascinar, Parecer, and Doler verbs (you will need to identify the correct form of the phrase needed based on the subject and comprehend these verbs in paragraphs)
  1. Comparison phrases (más que, menos que, tan…como, mejor que, menor que)- 1 or 2 questions asking to identify how the ítems are compared.
  1. Foods and Drinks vocabulary AND Cooking verbs
  2. you will have a list of ingredients to read and interpret with multiple-choice or true/false questions
  3. you will have to identify which utensil is used for a particular purpose
  4. you will have to identify various dishes that we have discussed and which countries they are from.
  5. you are guaranteed to have a question about the use of the word ‘limón’ in Latinoamérica vs the rest of the world.
  6. you will have to identify from which regions a couple of food items are.
  7. you will have to read a short paragraph about the process of cooking a dish.
  1. Taste terms (you will have a matching section where you need to identify how a food item tastes naturally; agrio, amargo, dulce, picante, salado, soso)
  1. Ser vs Estar—why is Ser used to describe foods? Why is Estar used to describe foods? (this is 1 question)
  1. Direct Objects and the Direct Object Pronouns (you will have to identify the direct object in Spanish and identify which pronoun would be used in the sentence/question—just like your quiz)
  1. Indirect Objects and the Indirect Object Pronouns (you will have to identify the indirect object in Spanish and identify which pronoun would be used in the sentence/question—just like your quiz)
  2. The Preterite Tense (the first past tense)- you will have to identify the correct conjugation based on the subject—please study these endings.
  1. What are the acronyms for remembering how to use Ser, Estar, and the Preterite Tense?
  1. Culture questions
  2. The definitions of the terms Hispanic, Latino, and Spanish
  3. Pablo Neruda, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Antoni Gaudí and the information we discussed about their lives and work.
  4. Leyendas- La Llorona, El Coco, El Chupacabra
  5. Machu Picchu (where is it, who inhabited it, who re-discovered it, what is it)
  6. What are three types of dances or music known throughout the Hispanic world?
  7. Who was the queen of Salsa? From which country was she?
  8. What was the general plot of the novel El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha by Miguel Cervantes?
  9. Names of the planets
  10. Names of various animals
  11. Pablo Picasso (What country was he from? In which style of art did he paint? What does his painting Guernica represent?)
  12. Salvador Dalí (in which style of art did he paint?)
  13. El Dorado (what was El Dorado? What was its purpose? What did the Spanish believe was there?)
