ESL501 – Created by Nyssa Bulkes, FA12 – PIE Structure Worksheet

INSTRUCTIONS: For each question, highlight the answer. If the question asks what the “point” is in the PIE structure provided, highlight the entire sentence that serves as the point of that paragraph.

Discuss with a partner, or think on your own, why that part of the paragraph is the answer, and write down some notes to explain your answer. We will reconvene and discuss these answers as a class.

Even if they wanted to, it is difficult for teenagers to avoid seeing smoking in the movies. Out of all of the movies that contain smoking each year, 27% are youth-rated (PG or PG-13) (Kalb, 2010). In other words, even if parents and teenagers are careful in choosing what they watch, there is still a good chance that they are going to be exposed to smoking in the movies.

Despite being well-known for its negative health effects, more and more of our youth begin smoking cigarettes every day– and part of this is caused by their constant exposure to smoking in the media. Every teenager yearns to grow up faster, and if they see their favorite actor smoking, they may think it is a quick way to get that provocative, sexy image. Actors, whether they want to be or not, are role models for today’s youth, and their actions, even negative ones like smoking, are portrayed as glamorous and powerful.

Third, as shown by Long, Adams, McLean, and Castanos (1976), students can take on roles and adopt positions which in lock-step work are usually the teacher's exclusive preserve and can thus practice a range of language functions associated with those roles and positions.

8) Sometimes two components of PIE structure can be combined into one sentence. In the following example, which two components are combined?

Lecture-style instruction, while convenient for classes with many students, significantly detracts from the students' interactive learning experience. Studies show that when lessons are organized in this manner, a typical teacher of any subject talks for at least half, and often for as much as two thirds, of any class period (Flanders, 1970).

PART III:

9) What component of PIE is missing from the example below?

In addition, according to a 2008 report by the National Cancer Institute, exposure is all that is necessary to encourage some teenagers to pick up their first cigarette (Kalb, 2010). Nudity and vulgar language are prohibited from youth-rated movies because of their negative influence, but exposure to smoking is almost worse because it is promoting a deadly habit.

10) In the following example, which component of PIE structure is missing?

Allowing students to access and spend time on Facebook in class is one of the best ways to increase student attendance. A recent student poll at the University of Illinois indicated that students want to keep up with what is going on in their personal lives at all times, and that limiting this to their spare time is unfair.
