ERA INTERNSHIP 16

Ambient Quality & Waste

Proposed Work

The Environmental Noise Directive (END) gives a common approach intended to avoid, prevent or reduce the harmful effects of environmental noise. The main target is an integrated noise management: the first step is to produce strategic noise maps for major roads, railways, airports and agglomerations, the second step is to inform and consult the public; and finally devise local action plans to reduce noise.

The Environment & Resources Authority (ERA) is the competent authority for the implementation of the END. The implementation of this Directive requires the development and implementation of various processes including data collection, assessment and management processes. Such processes are reflected in various submissions made by Malta to the European Commission.

Commission recommendation on the application of Article 36 of the Euratom Treaty concerns the monitoring of the levels of radioactivity in the environment for the purpose of assessing the exposure of the population as a whole. As a result, Malta is obliged to establish the facilities necessary to carry out continuous monitoring of the levels of radioactivity in air, water and soil.

Within this context, the Ambient Quality and Waste Unit within ERA is seeking candidates interested in undertaking an internship to assist in the implementation of the above mentioned obligations. University of Malta or other University students wishing to contribute and assist in such tasks are invited to apply. Such interns will be undertaking various tasks related to data centralisation processes, reporting requirements and research.
