Equipment hints for Norjam

Pitch size & logistics

Last Norjam the site allowance wasapprox.min 5m x 5m square for about 12.5 per person so a plot for 42 would have been 25m x 25m (25 x 25 +625/12.5) = enough space for 50. This will be confirmed once space and numbers have been allocated.

Space is limited on contingents’ sites so it is important to only take essential tents. Try to persuade leaders to share tents where possible. Think carefully about patrol tents – are 4 x 3 man tents better than 2 x 6 man tents with regard to their footprint?

Need to allow 3 metres gap between mess tents & probably told where it needs to go on your site.

Take a range of spare pegs, wooden ones are great in hard ground.

Mess Tent can be party tents if that is all that is available but they will need to be well strapped down probably with ratchet straps as soon as they are pitched. Remember whole camp may need to eat under cover due to rain/sun. Also need a social area for the girls. Think about if girls provide their own camp chairs or if you need to provide and what about eating tables?

Wash facilities must be included within your camp – provision to clean teeth etc. Not allowed for health and safety reasons to clean teeth using the sinks in the toilet blocks. If any contingents notice any problems with the toilet blocks, please report them to their sub-camp leaders as soon as possible, Bog Squad check on them twice a day.

Waste water must be collected and disposed of in the special areas provided. Take suitable containers to carry waste water, with a lid, maybe a trolley.

It is possible to have a night toilet tent on your site, elsan disposal facilities are available and camp leaders are responsible for emptying them.

It is nice to make a small gateway for your area, think about putting a rope or bunting to mark out your pitch to stop people walking through and thus encouraging them to use the doorway/gateway.

Chores

Remember, this is not like a normal unit camp – cannot cook on wood fires so will need gas stoves or ovens (which can be hired). Cooking times are longer on gas but more controllable.

The girls will not have time to patrol cook or do many of the chores that they would normally be expected to do/help with but it is still important to keeptents tidy. May be set up a rota for washing up.

Personal Kit/Equipment

At parents meeting remind parents that the girls do not need 2 clean sets of clothes every day. Girls will probably be too busy to change their trousers more than twice in the week! Girls also need to know their kit so need to pack their own bags! Perhaps need to limit bag size for the girls so that limits the amount they take (and hopefully the lost property!). These kit bags will need to be carried on to site.

NB - If you have any special requirements such as need to recharge wheelchairs overnight or closer to a toilet for night use, let Admin know as soon as possible so they can be accommodated.
