Equipment and Adaptations at Disability North

The Service Team provides impartial information and advice about equipment and adaptations that assist with independent living.

The aim of the service is to give you impartial advice and information about equipment and adaptations.

We want to help you to make the right decisions about the equipment that will help you to be more independent.

Before making a decision about buying a piece of equipment you can talk over any issues, receive independent advice and possibly try out the equipment.

Your enquiry will be picked up by a member of the Service Team. If they can’t answer your enquiry they will take your details and pass it on to another member of the team who has the relevant expertise, that person will get back to you as soon as possible. If needed an appointment can be made for you to come in and try equipment.

Due to Health and Safety regulations it is not possible for you to come in and try equipment without a qualified member of staff being present.

Appointments

An appointment can be made with one of the therapists for individual assessments and demonstrations in the display areas. Please allow between 30 to 90 minutes for your appointment, depending on the equipment you are trying.

We do not sell equipment but we can give you information about products and details of any local suppliers.

If you call in without an appointment there may not be a member of staff available who can help with your enquiry and you may need to make an appointment to come back at another time.

Equipment Available

The Display Areas contain a comprehensive range of equipment including the following:

  • A range of powered wheelchairs, scooters and manual wheelchairs.
  • An outdoor mobility track with slopes and kerbs.
  • Walking aids, including three and four wheeled walkers, (also referred to as Rollators).
  • Small household equipment display which includes cutlery, drinking cups and devices to make household tasks easier.
  • A bathroom with a range of bathing accessories, a walk-in bath, bathlifts and easy/level access showers. We also have a small range of personal care equipment.
  • We have a range of wash/dry facility toilets.
  • Stairlifts - We have two straight stairlifts, a curved stairlift and a vertical through floor lift.
  • In the bedroom there is a standard adjustable bed (divan style) a profiling care bed and a specialist Rotoflex bed. There is also a range of assistive bed equipment. We have a small range of telephones and accessories for people with hearing or visual impairments and/or diminished dexterity.
  • We have environmental controls - Possum Freeway handset and sockets –to demonstrate how they allow remote control access to household equipment and appliances. (We also have a Gewa electric page turner)
  • There are also hoists and moving and handling equipment.

Visits and Tours

A visit to Disability North can be arranged for anyone interested in our work and consists of an informal talk and a tour around the centre, including our fully equipped demonstration areas.

Visits, which can normally last up to two hours, may be of interest to students, professionals or volunteers.

Product reviews – the good, the bad and the others

Ricability would like to hear from older and disabled people about products they use and whether they found them to be good, bad or just plainly not fit for purpose.

These can be:

  • everyday products – such as cars, washing machines, television and video equipment, microwave ovens and others
  • assistive technology equipment – such as wheelchairs, hoists, stairlifts, communication aids
  • adapted products – such as wheelchair accessible vehicles and wheelchairs
