  1. Philosophy Department

1)PHIL 261: New course, Philosophy and Film 3 units at C2Amendment (1): We can’t require students to have a Netflix account, so you may want to include a phrase “students will be asked to explore films outside of class.” May need to purchase films and put them on reserve in the library. Amendment (2): Consider changing the verb “embrace” under “Measureable Benchmarks” to “synthesize,” “analyze,” or “identify” to aid in assessment. Phrase could be “recognize plural and divergent . . ” or “identify plural and divergent . . “ Amendment (3): Consider changing the language in the SLO from “consequences of the use of certain media to reflect reality” to “consequences of the use of certain media presents and represents reality” to complicate the relationship and to match the concepts in week 3. Amendments as suggested. Approved

2)PHIL 261: General Education request for C1 and EApproved

3)PHIL 400: General Education request for Writing Intensive (reviewed by JZ). Discussion: John has the final say at GEGC level for WI designation. He is currently reviewing the SCOs before EPCC approves the SCO. John provides appropriate faculty member(s) with feedback on the SCO. Process to approve WI courses is not smooth currently, but the broader concern is whether or not WI courses are really writing courses with incidental content or are they content courses that emphasize writing? We will continue to learn about this process, but for now approve of PHIL 400 moving forward to GEGC. Approved

  1. International Studies

1)IST 320: General Education request for Writing Intensive. (reviewed by JZ). Amendment (1): There is a deleted line from the General Description: Responsible Faculty line (IE) was deleted. It should read: E. Responsible Faculty: Caitlin Fouratt (IST), Victor Rodriguez (CHLS). Amendment (2): Responsible faculty member should ensure that references to assignments are consistent throughout the document. Amendment (3): Rather than require all of the specific assignments, perhaps include the following phrase: “please note two short paper and one long paper and required elements” to denote what is required versus what is up to instructor discretion, as long it meets the writing intensive standards. Discussion: Concern that WI courses already approved are inconsistent with those awaiting approval. We will continue to learn about this process, but for now approve of I/ST 320 moving forward to GEGC.Approved with amendments as suggested.
