Communications & Policy Internship

Please note that this position is unpaid. Application deadline is March 4, 2016.Applications for the Summer 2016 semester will be consideredon a rolling basis. Early applications will therefore have an advantage!
Intern Responsibilities

  • Handle EESI's social media outreach, includingFacebook,TwitterandInstagram accounts
  • Research and write articles on a broad range of energy, environment, and policy issues for EESI.org.
  • Topics include: climate change, renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable buildings, sustainable communities, sustainable transportation…
  • Research and write articles for our weekly newsletter,Climate Change News
  • Assist with the outreach for and execution of Congressional briefings and events
  • Explore creative ways to engage and expand EESI's network
  • Research congressional information: bills, current issues, legislation, policy
  • Attend Congressional hearings and other events and brief staff on material covered
  • Data entry and other administrative duties
  • Other responsibilities as required, based on interest areas and Executive Director’s needs. In particular, interns are invited to research and draft fact sheets and issue briefs that will be distributed to the policymaking community

Intern Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree (or degree in progress) in communications, journalism, political science, environmental studies, or a related field. Applicants with media experience or education are preferred. EESI also offerspolicy-focused internships
  • Interest in environmental and energy issues, with particular enthusiasm for the communication of pertinent information to policymakers and other interested parties
  • Strong writing and research skills
  • Ability to represent EESI professionally at events on Capitol Hill
  • Detail-oriented
  • Self-starter, flexible and able to manage multiple tasks
  • Open to feedback, with strong desire to develop professional skills
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team or independently as needed
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with Photoshop, database, layout and web software, video editing and/or online social media a plus

Internship Application Requirements

This internship requires a commitment of 25-40 hours per week for 10-12 weeks (1 semester), with extensions possible. We prefer full-time commitments. Citizens of any nationmay apply, but EESI does not sponsor visas. We offer a friendly, informal and progressive work environment.

Development Internship

Next available position: Summer 2016 semester. The application deadline is March 4, 2016.

Join EESI as a development intern and learn about all of EESI's sustainable energy and climate change work, while learning critical research, marketing, writing, and fundraising skills. Work with Director of Development on a wide range of activities to hone your skills.

Potential Intern Activities

  • Research potential funding sources (foundations, corporations, individuals, public sources)
  • Research and summarize variety of sustainable funding issues for use in grant proposals
  • Explore creative ways to increase EESI's visibility through marketing
  • Contribute to the development of marketing materials (i.e., graphic design, layout) in conjunction with EESI’s Development Director, Communications Coordinator and Communications Interns
  • Work with staff on ways to further engage EESI's Board of Directors, Board of Advisors and major donors
  • Represent EESI at official EESI briefings and other events
  • Explore grant opportunities and assist with writing, editing, and proofreading of grant proposal on climate, energy, transportation, buildings, and related topics
  • Data entry and donor acknowledgment
  • Other responsibilities as they develop, based on intern interest areas and organization needs

Intern Qualifications

  • Upperclassmen pursuing a bachelor's degree, recent graduates or students pursuing a master's degree in marketing, public relations, communications, journalism, politics, nonprofit management, public affairs, environmental studies, or a related field. Career changers are also very welcome.
  • Interest in environmental and energy issues, with particular enthusiasm for the communication of pertinent information to funders and potential funders
  • Graphic design and layout skills a plus
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong writing and research skills
  • Self-starter, flexible and able to manage multiple tasks
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with database software (especially Salesforce) and web software a plus
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team or independently as needed
  • Creativity and openness to expressing new ideas and capacity to produce questions that will further EESI’s mission

Policy Internship

Next available position: Summer 2016 semester. The application deadline is March 4, 2016.

Assist EESI Staff with research and writing projects focusing on energy and environmentally-related policy issues including, but not limited to: climate change, sustainable transportation and green communities, smart growth, high performance green buildings, energy efficiency initiatives, renewable energy and other various topics as needed.

Intern Responsibilities

  • Research, write, and edit articles and web content on a broad range of energy, environment, and US policy issues.
  • Attend Congressional hearings, other legislative activities and scientific and policy briefings and share observations with staff verbally or in writing.
  • Policy research and analysis, including budget, appropriations and current and upcoming legislation at the federal and state level.
  • Research and draft program and legislative reports (fact sheets, white papers.)
  • Assist with outreach, logistical preparation and execution of EESI sponsored Congressional briefings.
  • Identify, monitor and report on relevant science, technology and policy issues.
  • Update and maintain social media presence.
  • Project-related administrative tasks as necessary.

Intern Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree (or degree in progress) in a field directly related to environmental policy or public policy. (This requirement may be waived for candidates with demonstrated skill, experience, and interest in these fields.)
  • Interest in environmental and energy issues, with particular enthusiasm for the communication of pertinent information to policymakers and other interested parties.
  • Strong writing and research skills; clear and concise writing is required for newsletters, hearing/briefing write-ups and facts sheets.
  • Detail-oriented
  • Self-starter, flexible and able to manage multiple tasks
  • Open to feedback, with strong desire to develop professional skills
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team or independently as needed
