EMS Paramedicine ProgramProposal
Research
Our research found that there are many ways in which CWU’s EMS Paramedicine Program might consider providing more in-depth information to its students and prospective students. We started by looking at the top universities across the nation and competing programs. The following are links to EMS Paramedicine programs that we found to contain the criteria believed to attract prospective students and elongate the time they will spend researching your programs. These are not in any type of order.
BYU Idaho
Oregon Tech Wilsonville
Creighton University
University of New Mexico
University of Texas Health Science Center
Western Carolina University
University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center
George Washington University
By conducting an environmental scan on Paramedicine Programs in general, we found areas that CWU might want to consider when communicating the importance of a B.S. in Paramedicine. Our research found that public opinion on this degree varies and could be improved which can be of benefit as we decide what and how to communicate. The following are quotes found on various EMS/EMT/Paramedic forums:
“In my opinion four year programs are awesome and by participating in one you will be doing your part to advance the profession as well as become a more well-rounded provider. The down side is that EMS does not pay very well and you will be investing another 2 years in what is considered by many to essentially be a "McJob."
“EMS in the US is not set up to deal with bachelor’s level medics so you won't really see any employment advantages initially after graduating from such a program. However if you have designs on going into flight, education, management, or working for a high intensity ground service (Seattle's Medic One comes to mind) a bachelor’s in EMS can provide you with a competitive advantage that few in the profession have.”
“I can give you an example: let's say two 18 year olds decide to become paramedics. One of them goes to UW and gets a degree in biochemistry. During this time he spends the evenings of his junior year getting his paramedic certification. The other 18 year old gets his 4 year degree in paramedicine. They both do well and after working in the field, they both decide to go to medical school. Even though they took many similar classes the applicant with the degree in biochem from the better school will have a night/day better chance. The same, to a lesser extent, holds true with getting in to post-bac BSN programs or masters level opportunities.”
Step One
In order for us to be able to successfully meet departmental goals, we first need to know more about the aspects of programs that departments feel have the best chance to attract their target markets. To do that we will need answers the following questions. Partial answers came from our initial meeting so please verify or update any answers that you see here.
- What are the department’s/program’s top five bragging points?
- Advanced Standing Option
- More in-depth education
- Program is acquiring new technology
- One of only a few schools in the nation with this program
- Nearly 100% employment rate for graduates into their field
- Who are the department’s/program’s notable alumni and why are they notable?
- A graduate of the program is currently working in Washington D.C. for a high profile medical center.
- What is new and exciting in your department and what makes your programs great?
- Program is acquiring new technology
- What type of career can someone completing your program expect to obtain?
- Paramedic
- Who will be the contact person for your department? Have they been trained in Customer Service?
- Vickie Ostrow is the main contact person for the department.
Step Two
Website development consultation. If needed, we can provide a rubric style evaluation using American Marketing Association research. Any actual changes, however, would need to be completed by the person on your team responsible for your website. Primarily, we want to make sure that any communication we develop for you will include links that will take them to areas on your website that provide additional information.
Step Three
Event Creation: CWU EMS Paramedicine Program was present at Wildcat Day 2015. Our team hopes to work with Dr. Keith Monosky and Andres Moreno to develop and implement a specialized EMS Paramedicine Cat Tracks.

Scope of Work
Once EMS Paramedicinehas decided whichparts of the communication plan they would like us to execute, the Department (Client) will be given a Scope of Work report with an expected timeline for completion. That document will contain a description of:
- What CPORT commits to do for the client
- What the client commits to provide CPORT
- Which services are included in and excluded from the project
The document will also contain wording explaining how additional work outside of the scope or client change to the timeline will affect the outcome of the project. For example, delays in reviewing changes will likely cause a shift in the agreed-upon timeline. Long or continuous delays may necessitate sidelining that department’s project and moving to the next department in queue.
