Enlightenment Ideas and Music Today

Directions:

1. Divide into groups of four people. Each member of the group must have a different numbered song sheet, 1-4.

2. As a group you will read the lyrics to the songs and highlight lines of the songs that represent ideas about the Enlightenment.

3. As a group you will then decide which philosopher from the list is most like each song. There can be more than one philosopher for each song. Mark each song with the colored crayons to represent the philosopher.

4. As a group, list a current or popular song for each philosopher that better reflects their ideas. Write one paragraph and explain why and how the lyrics of the new song fit better with the philosopher’s ideals.

Philosophers & Their Ideas:

  • Blue- Thomas Hobbes and the nature of society (all men are brutish). Idea that men must forfeit some personal freedoms for the benefit of having a strong ruler who maintains a peaceful and orderly society.
  • Green- John Locke – Blank slate theory, natural rights and the idea that man has the right to overthrow a ruler who does not protect those rights.

Aretha Franklin - Respect

What you want
(Ooh) Baby, I got
(Ooh) What you need
(Ooh) Do you know I've got it
(Ooh) All I'm askin'
(Ooh) Is for a little respect when you come home (just a little bit)
Hey baby (just a little bit) when you get home
(Just a little bit) mister (just a little bit)

I ain'tgonna do you wrong, while you're gone
Ain'tgonna do you wrong (ooh) 'cause I don't want to
All I'm askin'
Is for a little respect when you come

I'm about to give you all of my money
And all I'm askin' in return, honey
Is to give me my profits
When you get home

Ooh, your kisses (ooh)
Sweeter than honey (ooh)
And guess what (ooh)
So is my money (ooh)
All I want you to do (ooh) for me
Is give it to me when you get home

R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Find out what it means to me
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Take care, TCB

(Re, re, re, re) 'spect
When you come home (re, re, re ,re)
Or you might walk in (respect, just a little bit)
And find out I'm gone (just a little bit)
I got to have (just a little bit)
A little respect (just a little bit)

John Lennon - Imagine

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Andy Williams – Born Free

Born free, as free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Born free to follow your heart

Live free and beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star

Stay free, where no walls divide you
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're born free

You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're born free

ZZ Top - Bad to the Bone

On the day I was born, the nurses all gathered 'round
And they gazed in wide wonder, at the joy they had found
The head nurse spoke up, and she said leave this one alone
She could tell right away, that I was bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
B-B-B-B-Bad to the bone
I broke a thousand hearts, before I met you
I'll break a thousand more baby, before I am through
I wanna be yours pretty baby, yours and yours alone
I'm here to tell ya honey, that I'm bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
I make a rich woman beg, I'll make a good woman steal
I'll make an old woman blush, and make a young woman squeal
I wanna be yours pretty baby, yours and yours alone
I'm here to tell ya honey, that I'm bad to the bone

Helen Reddy - I Am Woman (Hear Me Roar)

I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an' pretend
'Cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again

Oh yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong
(Strong)
I am invincible
(Invincible)
I am woman

You can bend but never break me
'Cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
'Cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul

Oh yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong
(Strong)
I am invincible
(Invincible)
I am woman

I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin' arms across the land
But I'm still an embryo
With a long, long way to go
Until I make my brother understand

Oh yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can face anything
I am strong (Strong)
I am invincible (Invincible)
I am woman

Beatles - Mother Nature’s Son

Born a poor young country boy, Mother Nature's son
All day long I'm sitting singing songs for everyone
Sit beside a mountain stream, see her waters rise
Listen to the pretty sound of music as she flies
Doo doodoodoodoodoodoodoodoodoodoo
Find me in my field of grass, Mother Nature's son
Swaying daises sing a lazy song beneath the sun

Beatles - Revolution

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well, you know We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out
Don't you know it's gonna be all right?
All right, all right
You say you got a real solution
Well, you know
We'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well, you know
We're all doing what we can
But if you want money
For people with minds that hate
All I can tell is brother you have to wait
Don't you know it's gonna be all right?
All right, all right
You say you'll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well, you know
You better free you mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao
You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don't you know it's gonna be all right?
All right, all right!

Three Dog Night - Easy to Be Hard

How can people be so heartless,
How can people be so cruel?
Easy to be hard...
Easy to be cold.
How can people have no feelings,
How can they ignore their friends?
Easy to be proud,
Easy to say no.
Especially people who care about strangers
Who care about evil and social injustice...
Do you only care about the bleeding crowd?
How about a needy friend? I need a friend.
How can people be so heartless?
You know I'm hung up on you.....
Easy to be proud,
Easy to say no.
Especially people who care about strangers
Who care about evil and social injustice...
Do you only care about the bleeding crowd?
How about a needy friend? We all need a friend.
How can people be so heartless?
How can people be so cruel?
Easy to be proud,
Easy to say no,
Easy to be cold,
Easy to say no,
Come on easy to be mean,
Easy to say no,
Easy to be cold,
Easy to say no,
Much too easy to say no.

Pink Floyd - Money

Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and you're O.K.
Money, it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream
Think I'll buy me a football team
Money, get back
I'm alright, Jack, keep your hands off my stack
Money, it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bull
I'm in the hi-fidelity first class travelling set

And I think I need a Lear jet
Money, it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise it's no surprise

Rolling Stones - You Can’t Always Get What You Want

I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she would meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man

No, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

But I went down to the demonstration
To get your fair share of abuse
Singing, "We're gonna vent our frustration
If we don't we're gonna blow a fifty-amp fuse"

I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda
My favorite flavor, cherry red
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me, and that was "dead" I said to him

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need

I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well I could tell by her blood-stained hands

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need

Pink Floyd - We Don’t Need No Education

We don't need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey teacher leave them kids alone
All in all it's just another brick in the wall
All in all you're just another brick in the wall

We don't need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey teacher leave us kids alone
All in all you're just another brick in the wall
All in all you're just another brick in the wall

Aretha Franklin –Think (Freedom)

You better think! (Think)
Think about what you'retryin' to do to me
Yeah, think (Think think)
Let your mind go let yourself be free
Let's go back, let's go back
Let's go way on way back when
I didn't even know you
You couldn't a been too much more than ten
(Just a child)

I ain't no psychiatrist
I ain't no doctor with degrees
But it don't take too much high I.Q.
To see what you're doin' to me

Oh, freedom (Freedom)
Freedom (Freedom)
Oh, freedom
Yeah, freedom (Yeah)
Hey, think about it
You think about it
There ain'tnothin' you could ask
I could answer you with I won't (I won't)
But I was gonna change my mind if
You keep doin' things I don't (don’t)

People walkin' around everyday
Playin' games and takin' scores
Tryin' to make other people lose their minds
Well be careful you don't lose yours
You need me, and I need you
(Need me)
(Don't know)
Without each other
Ain'tnothin' neither can do
Ooh yeah, think about it baby
