ENGR 1 Final Project: Battling Tops Competition Date: 12/14
Raw Materials: 1 2”x2”x2” Aluminum Cube
1 12”x12” Acrylic sheet (optional)
and/or miscellaneous materials for launcher
Max rip cord length = 30”
Objective: Design a top from the above materials that spins the longest while being
bumped by other tops in a 2 to 4-way competition.
Tools: Matlab, SolidWorks, Carmel High CNC milling machine, Desert Star laser cutter
Procedure
1) Meet with your teams and analyze several different top layouts in Matlab to arrive at a design for a TOP and a LAUNCHER that launches the top at high spin rate.
2) Draw the top profile in SolidWorks and make a 3D revolution of the part.
3) Draw the launcher parts in SolidWorks and export 2D drawings into Adobe Illustrator
4) In small groups we’ll visit Carmel High outside of classtime and put block into CNC mill
5) In small groups we’ll visit Desert Star and cut the acrylic with laser cutter
6) Test and measure spin duration of Top
7) Create a final report in Word including Matlab analysis, SolidWorks drawings, photographs and a 2-3 page double-spaced writeup
8) Create a PowerPoint presentation to share your design ideas with the class
NOTES
Not all design profiles are easy to cut. For time reasons, you must restrict your design to the first two, the third one (side cut) would need a metal cutting lathe and takes a long time to do)
OKAY OKAY NO SIDE CUTS
