Part 1

Narrator:Connie and Peter are talking about their eating habits. Listen to what they say. The recording will be played two times.
When you hear a beep (beep), circle the best answer. You now have 30 seconds to read the questions. (30-second music)
The recording will begin now.

[Peter:Would you like some potato chips, Connie?

Connie:I’d love to have some but my mum said they are high in fat and salt so I shouldn’t eat them too often.

Peter:That’s true. I shouldn’t eat them, either. How about one of these cookies? They’re very crunchy and have lots of peanuts.

Connie:Oh, I can’t eat peanuts. I’m allergic to them. If I eat them, my skin goes red and itchy. The last time I ate a peanut, I had to take medicine for one week.

Narrator:Question 1. Why does Connie NOT eat potato chips? (beep) (8-secondpause)
Question 2. What happens if Connie eats peanuts? (beep) (8-second pause)

Peter:You’re very careful about what you eat, Connie.

Connie:Yes. My mum is a nurse, so she cooks healthy food at home. Do you remember we learned about the Food Pyramid last week?

Peter:Yes, we did a questionnaire about our diet. I need to eat more rice or noodles.

Narrator:Question 3. Which food group does Peter need to eat more of? (beep) (5-second pause)

Connie:Oh, I love rice. I can eat two large bowls for dinner!

Peter:That’s a lot. I can’t even finish half a bowl. I think rice is tasteless.

Connie:I think it tastes wonderful. I love to eat it with steamed fish.

Peter:I love beef. I can eat steak every day.

Connie:I don’t eat beef but I eat plenty of fish and chicken. I drink milk every day, and I sometimes have yoghurt and cheese as well.

Narrator:Question 4. Which of the following does Connie NOT eat? (beep) (8-secondpause)

Peter:You seem to have a balanced diet. Our bodies need different nutrients for good health.

Connie:Hmm … the human body is a complicated machine.

Peter:Actually, a large part of it is water. Do you know what percentage of your body is water?

Connie:Let me think … maybe about fifty per cent.

Peter:That’s close. Actually, about seventy per cent of our body is water.

Connie:Well, I do drink a lot of water, and I drink juice after doing exercise to help meregain energy.

Peter:That’s fantastic, Connie. Regular exercise is important to keep us fit and healthy.

Connie:I know. What about a game of basketball?

Peter:Sure! Let’s get the ball and we can play in the gym.]

Narrator:Question 5. What percentage of the human body does Connie think is water? (beep) (8-second pause)
