Recommendations for English TCP Students

The three required English Education methods courses, are designed to give you the fullest possible preparation for teaching secondary English. They work best when taken in the following sequence:

1.EDS 347/ENG 361. Teaching English in Middle and Secondary School. EDU 300, 302, 360 305 should be taken prior to or concurrently with 347. TCP English majors must take this as EDS347 to meet state requirements. This course provides a foundation in current theories, issues, and methods for teaching secondary English. It also covers lesson planning, unit planning, and course design in English language arts, basic skills that you will need in order to do well in the two 400-level English methods courses and in student teaching. Therefore, EDU 347/ENG 361 should be taken before any other English Education methods courses if possible. You must complete this coursebefore student teaching.

2.EDR 446/ENG 412. Writing for Middle and Secondary School Teachers builds on the theory and methods covered in 347, both broadening and deepening your understanding of the best current approaches to teaching writing. Because it contains a field experience component that assumes some previous experience in the schools, you must complete EDU 300, 302, 360 or have consent of the instructor before taking 446. We also recommend that you complete 347 before taking 446 since materials and methods covered in 347 provide necessary background. TCP English majors should take this as ENG 412 since it serves as your upper level writing requirement.

3.EDR 445/ENG 410. Improvement of Reading in the Middle and Secondary School expands your understanding of the reading process and presents both methods and materials for teaching literature as well as other reading materials. It may be taken any term after completing EDU 300, 302, 360 or with consent of the instructor. We recommend that you also complete 347 before taking 445 because you will be able to draw on your knowledge of lesson and unit planning. TCP English majors should take this as EDRU 445 in order to save English credits for as many literature courses as possible.

4.EDS 469. Student Teaching in Secondary School. EDS 347/ENG 361 must be completed prior to student teaching. If possible, 445 and 446 should also be completed before student teaching so you have the fullest possible set of methods and materials to draw on when planning classroom activities. It is strongly recommended that students not take a course while doing their student teaching in secondary English because the combination of preparation and paper-marking in language arts classes is extremely time-consuming.

5.Literature Requirements. Secondary English teachers need the broadest possible background in literature and approaches to literary analysis. We strongly recommend that TCP English majors take at least one full year of American Literature, including early and modern American literature since they are likely to be teaching these areas. One course in ethnic literature is required for the major, but other courses in ethnic literature and courses in women’s literature are also highly recommended.
