Welcome to Ms. Banks7th Grade ELA class!

We will be completing four units of study this year, each lasting nine weeks. I will include a link for you to review the standards that we will be covering this year. These standards will be addressed using the following:

Unit 1 – Extended Text The Giver

Theme: Individuality versus Conformity: Realizing the Relationships and Responsibilities Between Individuals, Societies, and Communities

Unit 2 – Extended Text Gifted Hands

Theme: Demonstrating Character: From Average to Exceptional

Unit 3 – Extended Text The Hobbit

Theme: There and Back Again: What Science Fiction and Fantasy Can Teach Us About Ourselves

Unit 4 – Extended Text While the World Watched

Theme: Burning Bridges: What We Can Learn From History

All texts will be read in the classroom. Books will be kept in each desk for use by all students. Essays will be written in class as well, although some writing/preparation may be required at home.

Grading:

Tests/Quizzes/Essays/Presentations-60%

Classwork-30%

Homework/Anchor Activities -10%

DGPs:

Classwork will include the DGP (Daily Grammar Practice) that begins every class. It will be presented on the board to students as they walk into the classroom. Students are expected to come in the room, sit at their assigned desks, and begin working on the DGP immediately. Failing to follow this procedure and immediately begin DGP will result in a zero for classwork for the day. DGPs must be attempted. No points are counted off for incorrect work; however, failure to correct the work once we go over it in class will be counted off when notebooks are checked.

SAFEs (Short and Frequent Evaluations):

SAFEs will be given nearly every week. Some weeks, such as those where we are working on essays, may not have a SAFE. SAFES are used to evaluate student performance and understanding on the lessons taught during that week. Students will have graded SAFEs returned quickly so that we can address any missed or misunderstood concepts.

HOMEWORK/ANCHOR PACKETS:

Homework/Anchor packets will be given out every two weeks. They will be given out on Monday and due on the next Friday of the following week. An anchor activity is an activity that students will work on when they finish their classwork, group work, or tests – while other students may still be working. This allows students to utilize their class time effectively. These packets are to be kept in the student’s notebook until the day that they are due, at which time they will be taken up. Students MUST come to class each day with their notebooks with the Homework/Anchor packet inside so that I may address any questions your child may have. These packets will account for 10% of a student’s grade; therefore, not completing these assignments will automatically lower your child’s grade by a letter grade.

BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology):

BYOT is only permitted when the teacher allows it for educational purposes. Per school policy, phones, ear-buds, MP3 players, and all other technology must be stowed in lockers at the beginning of the school day. If I see any technology during class, I will take it up. The first time, I will keep it locked in my classroom until the end of the day, then return it to the student. After that, I will send the item to the front office and a parent will be required to come in and pick it up. Student may also be issued a citation for not following instructions.

SUPPLIES:

Students are required to have notebook paper, a composition notebook, index cards, a class notebook with tab dividers, pencils, and blue or black ink pens Most students will also want their own colored pencils, highlighters, crayons, or colored markers. At the beginning of class, if the student does not have a pen, he or she may borrow one, and return it at the end of class. Not having materials is not an excuse not to begin work immediately upon entering the classroom. Final drafts of essays must be typed or neatly written in blue or black ink.

My goal is for your child to be as successful as he or she can be. I am willing to do whatever it takes for this to happen. I look forward to a partnership with you and your child.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at .
