Course Description: This course is designed to introduce sophomore English students to a variety of reading and writing experiences through the in-depth study of the short stories, novels, non-fiction, legends, Shakespearean drama, poetry, and grammar. Supplemental reading materials may also be used. The development of critical reading, thinking, and writing skills, along with the improvement of literary analysis skills, will be emphasized through class discussions, essays, creative writing, technology assignments, oral presentations, and a research project. Due to time constraints, homework will include reading.

Coursework includes the following (in no particular order):

Daily Bell Work: Grammar Exercises/Journal Writing/Vocabulary

Literature:

-Poetry: Various selections from the text and other sources

-Drama: Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare

-Novel: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

-Short Stories: Selections from the textbook

-Nonfiction/Informational Text: Selections from the text and outside sources

-Literary Terms

Grammar:

-Review Punctuation and Capitalization

-Phrases and Clauses, Sentence Combining

-Subject/Verb Agreement

-Pronoun/Antecedent Agreement

-Pronoun Usage

-Frequently Confused/Misused Words

Vocabulary:

-Unfamiliar vocabulary found in literature selections

-Literary terms

Writing:

-Journal entries

-Literature responses

-Research project (Specific guidelines will be given, and ample library time will be provided)

-Multiple Essays: Opinion/argument, Informative/explanatory, Narrative

Technology Project:

-Relative to To Kill a Mockingbird or Julius Caesar

End-of-Course Test: State of Tennessee Mandated Assessment

Classroom Expectations:

-Students are expected to follow all classroom rules and procedures. These will be provided and discussed at the beginning of the semester. All students will contribute to a safe and productive learning environment. Failure to follow classroom rules will result in the following consequences:

-First offense: Verbal warning

-Second offense: Definitions

-Third offense: Write-offs in isolation

-Fourth offense: Office referral/pink slip

*Egregious offenses may result in immediate office referral/contact at the discretion of the teacher.
