Dear Parents:
We welcome your child into the English program at Kingwood Park High School. The English Department adheres to the policies outlined in the student handbook regarding make-up work, progress reports, and grading. English courses count tests, projects, and compositions as 60 percent and quizzes, homework and daily work as 40 percent.
This year we will be reading several works of literature, including such classics as Romeo and Juliet, A Raisin in the Sun,Of Mice and Men, and The Odysseyas well as the genres of short story, non-fiction, and poetry. Books are available as classroom sets; however, students are encouraged to bring their own copies. Romeo and Juliet is available in the textbook, but many students like the No Fear Shakespeare or Shakespeare Made Easy versions which provide the original text as well as a modern English translation side-by-side. We will also be teaching intensive composition, grammar, and vocabulary units that will encompass the entire year.
SUPPLIES
Students are required to purchase a 1” binder; the binder will be used on a daily basis throughout the year, so students can keep up with any English assignments. Students should have loose-leaf paper and a pen/pencil in class every day.
Tutoring will be held in classroom2000H in the library on Monday and Friday at 6:45 to 7:15 A.M.
StudentE-mail and Password: Please have your student setup a school email, so he or she can utilize it throughout his or her career here at K-Park. I will be asking students to use the same password for every educational website. This makes it easy for students to remember their logon information. (One e-mail + one password = less confusion!)
Student Downloads: Occasionally students will be asked to download or print items at home. Those who do not have a computer or who are experiencing computer or printer problems will be able to use the computer lab in the library and in the Flex Lab before or after school.
Textbooks: Our Literature books will be utilized as a classroom set this year. Students can either access the textbook online, or see Mr. Solomon in room 1300 to obtain a textbook for at home use.
Accessing Online Textbook: username: pkpark3password: panther.
REMIND101: Our class will use a confidential mass-messaging service to communicate important information, due dates, and test reminders. It is free to sign up, and you can opt to receive messages via text, e-mail, or both.
